Towing a camper

Hello,

We are coming from Southcentral PA and will be towing a camper. Are there many large bridges to go over? Also, I don't think we would have to take the Chesapeake Bridge/Tunnel, but just want to verify. Thanks! The wind can get pretty rough on the bridges, but I know that people camp here all of the time, so I'm hoping it's not too bad. We are looking to stay in Kill Devil Hills.

If coming in from the north, you will cross the 3 mile Wright Memorial Bridge at Point Harbor.

If coming in from the west, you will cross the 5.2 mile Virginia Dare Memorial Bridge at Manns Harbor.

Depending on your route, there may be additional bridges in Virginia.

If you’re coming from the north you’ll go over the High Bridge in Chesapeake. (That’s really its name) And the causeways too, no matter which tunnel you take.
The bottom line is make other plans if the gusts are over 25 mph. Hopefully your vehicle is heavier than your trailer, you’d be better off. An anti sway hitch is a nice feature when towing in windy conditions.

If you come down I-95 and take I-64, you'll have to go over bridge/tunnels on I-64 or I-664 going from Hampton to Chesapeake. You'll need to stop where indicated to have your propane tanks checkedmust be turned off when going through either tunnel. The bridges themselves are not that long, but pulling a trailer through the tunnel can be a bit hairy. If you want to avoid that experience, you can take US-460 from Petersburg (below Richmond) to Chesapeake and avoid both the I-64 traffic and either of the bridge/tunnels I mentioned above.

I am curious where you plan to stay with a trailer in KDH. If there are places they can park I am not familiar with any in KDH. Until the winds get up around 30+ mph they don't worry about what goes on a bridge and we don't have any winds like that forecast for some time.

Isn't there a campground in Colington? It would have a Kill Devil Hills address, if so.

Charlie's, the old Decharmel's park, has a couple of short term spots, unless they changed that in the last couple of years. it was only a few sites, across from the pool.

I would find my way to 81 South , take it to 66 east get off on 17 south and follow that to 95 south, Stay on 95 to Petersburg and take 460 to 58 and on to 64 and to 168 to the Outer banks, Only One or two big bridge this way in Virginia , Of course you will take 168 in North Carolina and you will have the bridge to the beach.

" 95 south, Stay on 95 to Petersburg"

I live in Richmond and I'd take I-295 around the city unless it's really windy. The Varina-Enon bridge across the James River can get breezy.

re: I-295

Do NOT speed at all through Hopewell. Just stick to 70-72. It's only a mile or two.

It's called The Million Dollar Mile.
Hopewell's population is almost 23,000.

"Location: A two-mile section of Interstate 295 bordering the city of Hopewell.
Origin of the nickname: The term was coined because the high volume of tickets written by the Hopewell Sheriff's Office generated substantial revenue for the city, sometimes exceeding $1 million per year.
Enforcement: A special unit of the Hopewell Sheriff's Office was dedicated to patrolling this stretch of highway to issue speeding tickets. "

I second what John says about "The Million Dollar Mile"! Especially if you are from out of town. I drove that stretch twice everyday for work for years and I can count on one hand the number of times I saw a Virginia plate pulled over.
