Isn't that how it's been pronounced for at least, well, forever?

Yes. But even today inlanders call it Rodanth.

You're right. Had a discussion with an employee at the Liberty Station on that very subject. He said local people still mispronounce it and he couldn't believe it. And of course, tourists do and always asked him about the " Nights in Rodanth" movie.

To be fair, it's all about geography. In my past home, we had a gorgeous view of Cahas MTN which is situated in Franklin County....one over from Rke County where the house was. I spoke to a local vendor one day referencing the mountain and pronounced it CA'- hoss, and he corrected me to say it was pronounced Caa-HAZE' by the locals.

It's all about where ya are and taking cues from the long time folks that have lived it and worked it.

I always ask now...

How's the old Norfolk Academy cheer go? Something like:

"we don't drink, we don't smoke, Norfolk, Norfolk!"

I worked at a company with Norfolk in the name and dared not pronounce it correctly to my customers when calling them for fear I would get fired if someone beyond my cubbie heard me! Most of my co-workers pronounced it NOR'-FOKE. Tsk tsk.

Gotta go with the flow!

Gotta say I knew about your slaughter of word pronunciations in the South. lol. May I also include the name Ashley for a boy….my husband kept saying in a restaurant WHY ARE THEY CALLING THAT BOY,ASHLEY? (our daughters name)…we are Yankees. I calmly replied REMEMBER GONE WITH THE WIND, JOHN!! he went on and on about it!

Used to live in Williamsburg. Lost count of the various pronunciations of Norfolk.

The one guy I knew named... it was spelled Ashlee.

Southron is legit.

Of all the celebrities who grew up in Norfolk, none speak with a stronger Norfolkian accent than Lefty Driesell. He pronounces out as oot and Maryland as Merland.

Yep. That eastern Va. accent is unmistakable. Sitting around the house = sittin' aboot the hoose.

Although he is from more central Va., see Ward Burton.
