Fingers crossed it won't be too windy for too long next week, but the first part of the week looks drummy with a chance of rain. Banana

As a visitor to Hatteras Island this weekend, I’m keeping a very close eye on this. It doesn’t look like the swell or waves will be quite as bad as Erin, but currently stuck on what to do. Come down and hope for the best? Wait it out and see if there is a mandatory evacuation? I’m keeping an eye on all the official sites too, but wanted to see what anyone else thought.

It's been beautiful this week. Figures, I'm leaving Monday. I'll be back with my wife in two weeks or so. She's babysitting the grandsons now while their parents are on a getaway to the Homestead or Greenbriar or somesuch.

She also had a 5-minute laser touchup on her eye this week - sometimes cataract surgery is perfect but after a few years it turns really foggy. It's a quick fix - when the laser is available. I had mine done two years ago and the machine at the VA Eye Institute was booked up for three months. They have a lot of doctors.. You can drive yourself home.

my first post gang so please be kind. We've been traveling down from NY for 30+ years and have been hit by Irene and Dorian prior to our trips ending them before they even started. We're due to come down Saturday Oct. 4th ...staying on the narrow strip right before Hatteras village. I know the road get covered with water with any rainfall ..that's usual. BUT ...just in case we're there and need to take our vehicles to higher ground d/t risk of flooding ...WHERE is the closest location for that ? Thank you ...we're keeping our fingers crossed and praying for everyone .

If you are on Hatteras Island and need to park a vehicle look for something near the Old Burrus Motor court ( by the fire station) or over on Kohler Dr. , I don't think you will have an issue looking at the tracks right now but its good to have a plan.

Hello, mtnbikechic!

From Frisco...same neighborhood as Alexy!

Just wanted to add- I have observed many folks parking on ramp 49....very high area in the parking spaces just past Billy Mitchell Airfield. Take a right at Frisco Rod and Gun going north on 12 from your rental. Many places to park....even on the side of the road up that way. Also, Cape Hatteras Baptist Church at the entrance of Brigand's Bay....Buccaneer Drive off of highway 12. A lot of the locals in my neighborhood here park at the Church during storms. Both places have higher elevation.

Things should be...hoping...settled down by then.. have a safe trip from New York and a wonderful vacay!

.
For anyone who would like the same info for the Kitty Hawk area, the best place to park your car on high ground is the Catholic Church on Kitty Hawk Rd. It was the site of the US Army radar station during World War II, because it was on such high ground. And you can see by the picture that the parking lot is huge. Also at a good elevation is Lighthouse Christian Fellowship close by on Beacon Dr. behind Daniel’s Homeport Coastal Furnishings.

Anyone is welcome to park at either of the parking lots, but they request that you leave your phone number visible on your dash board.

Surfchex cam at Durant Station. (Surfchex has cameras at other locations up and down the coast)

Island Free Press: " Drew Pearson, Director of Dare County Emergency Management.

“The long-period swells are likely to cause ocean overwash in areas with vulnerable dune structures. The ocean will bring large breaking waves of 6 to 8 feet, building to 10 to 12 feet peaking on Wednesday and Thursday, and begin to subside by Friday."

So very sad for those people. I'm on ramp 49 now taking pics and video of the surf. Monster waves on a much more docile beach here....cannot imagine the waves in Buxton.

So, what happened? I guess the two storms reinforced the swell from way out? Crazy
