Thank you for posting that link.

A couple of years ago a buddy of mine quipped that the state or the county or someone needs to build 2 or 3 rest stops on 12 between Southern Shores and Corolla. It would be cheaper than a bridge.

And their next move will be to pave every square inch of Carova.

With the inflation of labor and materials, along with the change orders that will be generated as a result of unforeseen conditions, look for the cost to be closer to 1 and a half billion. Even the free spending federal government recognizes that. A boondoggle that, if built, will be the final nail in the coffin that once was the glorious outer banks.

Support or opposition are largely irrelevant (though it's notable that despite Ducks and Southern Shores being the cause of issues for themselves and Corolla, they're overridingly willing to sacrifice Corolla for they myth of perceived reduced traffic - very on brand though).

Projects are required to keep these non-progression events happening, or to officially wind down and scrap a project, which no state ever willingly does because that would mean no ability to restart should federal funds magically materialize and because the "toe in water" status provides ongoing work tasks, without which there would be need to either spool up a replacement project or reductions in positions.

How support/opposition breaks down on a larger scale is dabatable, but the topic is hugely profitable contention point for media regardless. That's why you see these articles feigning like things are happening.

It's never going to be bondable or financially feasible, but it's generatig money in the attention it gets.
