Conditions on Hatteras

Talking to my radio buddy's on Hatteras they tell me the water is coming over at Buxton, that will only get worse.

They tell me there are LOTS of people there so not many left - that does not surprise me with the track of this storm. If correct it won't even give us any rain. Or darn little. Buxton will get hurt though.

I'm sorry Tim, what does that mean? Lots of people or no people?

Thanks Tim, I'm worried about Buxton. They have lost a lot of real estate in the last year or two. If this is bad at all, the Cape Hatteras Motel may be washed out. Fingers crossed that it doesn't get too much worse.

Took me a minute too. I'll rephrase.

They tell me there are LOTS of people there so not many evacuated.

True, picking up a few things at Dollar Gen I saw several out of state tagged vehicles, no OBX...I busted on one guy plated CO asking him (w a big smile on my face) "you mean we haven't run you off yet?"

I left yesterday, no NPS checks, nothing - I suspect today will be different (but that's what I thought yesterday)

Things starting to get kinda greasy in the Tri: Click to follow link...

hi tide (around 5ish) today is gonna be weird....tomorrow, even more so. Still dumbschiterry abounds, while battening stuff down almost went in after seeing a young kid struggling in the surf...he finally "beached" , all scraped up, and teetered his way back to his cottage.

Those poor southerly facing beaches (Buxton, etc) are getting hammered.

We're all gonna see overwash like we've never seen/experienced before...as Mr Brett said, there is no beach left (after last years weird scrub) from Hatteras to Rodanthe.

The best day of puppy drum fishing I've ever had in the surf was in surf that looked somewhat like that, on a slightly smaller scale. I bet there are drum to be had in that white wash.

It means not many left as they were supposed to do. They are trapped there for a day or two it sounds like.

Yeah, and if they headed north to "escape" the situ in Buxton/S Hatteras, it's not over yet....as the storm exits and winds shift hard to NE, combined w the 4.2 tide at 7, it still could weird(er) in the Tri Villages.

as far as damage it has been a gigantic nothing burger. The normal places that get overwash got overwash bt there has been no tidal surge at all. Once 12 is open I would imagine the island will open right back up.

Every wave wasn't huge and they didn't all break at the same time.

This is interesting. Just popped up on my phone. It appears no reentry for persons on Saturday, 8/23. But, who knows. Maybe, maybe not.

Cameras seem to back this up. There's no traffic movement coming north from the Basnight. Crews are trying, but there's a ton of sand still on NC12.

fwiw, one cubic yard of dry sand weighs about 2400 pounds. That's 1.2 tons.

Two tons of sand if the pic will load. The banana is to show size.
