crazy! just got the alert on my phone and here's notification via nws email-

OBX Alerts: State of emergency has been declared for Dare County due to the anticipated impacts from distant Hurricane ERIN. MANDATORY EVACUATION OF "HURRICANE EVACUATION ZONE A" (HATTERAS ISLAND) TO START AT 1000 AM ON AUGUST 18, 2025. MORE AT DareNC.gov/HurricaneErin
NWS ALERT:

HIGH SURF ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM NOON TUESDAY TO 8 AM EDT FRIDAY... ...COASTAL FLOOD WATCH IN EFFECT FROM TUESDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH FRIDAY MORNING
Coastal Flood Watch issued August 17 at 2:00PM EDT until August 22 at 8:00AM EDT by NWS Newport/Morehead City NC
* WHAT...For the High Surf Advisory, large breaking waves of 15 to
20+ feet expected in the surf zone. For the Coastal Flood Watch,
significant oceanside inundation above ground level likely in
low- lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways.

* WHERE...East Carteret County, and Northern Outer Banks,
Ocracoke Island and Hatteras Island.

* WHEN...For the High Surf Advisory, from noon Tuesday to 8 AM
EDT Friday. For the Coastal Flood Watch, from Tuesday
afternoon through Friday morning.

* IMPACTS...Extreme beach and coastal damage is likely along the
oceanside, resulting in a significant threat to life and
property. Large dangerous waves will likely inundate and destroy
protective dune structures. Severe flooding will likely extend
inland from the waterfront causing flooding of many homes and
businesses with some structural damage possible. Numerous roads
will likely be impassable under several feet of water and
vehicles will likely be submerged. Actions will need to be
taken to protect life and property. Very dangerous swimming and
surfing conditions expected, as well as the wave action
resulting in significant beach erosion.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...This is expected to be a prolonged duration event,
with the potential for portions of NC-12 and secondary roads
along the Outer Banks, in particular on Hatteras and Ocracoke
Islands, to be impassable and/or inaccessible for several days
due to significant wave run up. Minor soundside flooding will
also be possible if stronger winds develop over the Pamlico
Sound.
If travel is required, allow extra time as some roads may be
closed. Do not drive around barricades or through water of
unknown depth. Take the necessary actions to protect flood-prone
property.

Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to
dangerous surf conditions.

I saw that. Got alert to phone. Because of RT12 projected overwash?

I may have been optimistic with my own personal opinion, but a lot of lives will be in jeopardy in all that traffic.

Contrast this rather sudden evacuation announcement with past events that seemed to take a week of indecision and jawboning to make an official announcement. Sun USA Flag

Mike's Weather Page is and always has been full of misinformation and complete trash. Stick to NOAA official products

Yes, the roads will be impassible to many visitors and emergency response will be degraded. Plus there will be flooding in many oceanfront areas. It's better to get everyone off the island than to risk anything

Waiting to hear if we will be running out of Stumpy Point or some other emergency route. I'm sure we will be working modified schedules when I get back to the boat on Tuesday. I'll post what I know then.

In the sound areas, probably ok. The east facing beaches are going to get damaged.

The Pamlico won't be won't be a fun place to be if this thing gets even a little bit close, I can promise you that, especially out to Ocracoke.

It's also wet. We get waves breaking over the pilot house in squalls out there. Last year we had the steel doors on the bow blow clean off the hinges and into the nets with a full deck. Every vehicle on that boat was washed 100 times over with salt water. Don't sleep on the Pamlico.

All us locals know that "Mandatory" doesn't mean mandatory. They're trying to get the "visiters" to leave. South of Oregon Inlet route 12 is very likely to wash over/flood which would trap tourists down there.

As a Corolla Local if you are coming to Carova Beach on Vacation you are probably headed for trouble. Getting to and from your house on the beach is going to be a problem. Make sure you have a 4wd beach buggy with a 5 inch lift kit minimum. Even then there will be times when you just cannot get to or from your house because of the high surf. That's pretty much guaranteed.
