Just saw on Facebook that 99.1 The Sound has updated their profile picture and cover picture. Hopefully, this is a sign that they are coming back on the air or online at least. The teasing is killing me. We need their unique style is missed and much needed.

July 10 has passed so is it on air, did the license expire? Well I guess not. I just tuned to 99.1 and there is a recording so it IS on air. I wonder if 104.1 is too? Nope

Bankruptcy? That makes sense. In my 20+ years living here having uninterrupted radio broadcasting on OBX felt like it was the station owners part-time hobby to keep stations broadcasting. Also station formats changing pushed me out of the local listening market. That's why I'm a SiriusXM radio listener.
I see a Lawrence Loesch mentioned in the article. Are he and Rick Loesch the same person?
I wonder why SAGA hasn't snapped up some stations for PR purposes? This would be pocket change for SAGA USA Flag

Our radio club uses some of the towers owned by radio stations or other companies that rent space on them. I also know the chief engineer for the 99.1 and 104.1 stations. He told me they cost a lot of $$$ to operate and the towers always need maintenance being so close to salt water. FCC requires they be painted now and then and that is expensive. He also told me the final output on 99.1 failed often and all you could hear was very low (exciter only) power, like 50 watts. He said they need a new transmitter but that was big money, then you need to hire a tower climb team, etc $$$. That is why you often could not hear it unless you were close to the transmitter (Wanchese). To fix that is $$$$ too.

Income from radio has slowed way down. Too many other options these days and so there is not a lot of money being generated from advertising. If it were a good money maker they wouldn't all go out of business.

I'm not a business guy. I would think operating 9 radio stations (before bankruptcy) would be really expensive. Wouldn't it be better to focus on 1 or 2? USA Flag

According to the article Bill linked, it looks like 99.1's former DJ is buying the station. She has been there a long time, as I remember her from the early 2000s. Looks like East Carolina Radio bought out Beach 104.1 so hopefully that will be making a return soon as well. I have some pictures of the 104.1 broadcasting building in Currituck that was later converted into a house for the former owner (I was friends with his daughter) before it burned down. It was interesting seeing a bedroom with backlit "On Air" and "exit" signs.

98.1 is very similar to The Sound. It’s been around over a year now and is worth a listen.

Yes, it is. We listen to it all the time. And I'm pretty sure it's a "one-off" station, no corporate ownership, etc.

Just to see what was going on, I tuned into 99.1 The Sound this morning. There is music non-stop, no commercials, no DJs for now. Must be in new station "test mode". The signal doesn't seem very strong, but it's on and it's good!

Our 145.290 machine is on that 1000 ft tower at about the 450 ft level. I remember the house both before and after the fire. Ken Mann's TV Ch 2 used to be on that tower before it moved north (and fell down as I remember).

Unfortunately, not streaming yet. Hopefully, that is coming soon, especially if the signal isn't very strong.

The signal strength is not bad at all. I can easily hear it in Kitty Hawk, the transmitter is in Wanchese.

Beach 104.1 is now a conservative talk station. 96.7 The Coast is similar to what Beach 104.1 was, even has Jody doing the Morning Show.

The return of 99.1 has been great. I like their song choices better than 98.1 but like 98.1, The new Sound is already repeating its song list regularly. Daily, if not twice a day, I hear "Ghost Town" by the Rolling Stones and "Burning Down the House" by Talking Heads among others.

the 99.1 FB page said it would start streaming soon. Every day, it has a few more ads but still no DJs.

The Sound is already repeating, is correct! They must be on a 12 or 24 hr loop. I've heard Springsteen's Pink Cadillac every day at 7:15 AM or so, followed by same songs every day.

The signal seems to come and go some too. Hopefully all this is still in test mode and will be straightened out soon.
