So this heat advisory specifically mentions mainland Dare. Is OBX missing the bullet on this one? USA Flag

"Update: The National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City has issued an Extreme Heat Watch in effect from Saturday morning through Sunday evening for an area that includes mainland Dare and mainland Hyde counties. The extreme heat will bring dangerously hot conditions with index values up to 113 possible."

Capt just gave the order to tie up early due to excessive heat. Somehow they call getting off 12 hours in "early". ?? This is what it looked like underway this morning.

Yeah gonna be hot/humid, fortunately looking like HI will get a little NE wind off the water which will help...gonna be another CHEC "energy alert" day for sure.

Hey, your vessel wasn't the one hit by lightning? That was a "yikes" for sure

Well, I had prayed to be put out of my misery briefly....I guess I'm lucky I didn't include our vessel by name in my request. (;

Just got home from the fairgrounds. Hot, hot, hot. But it was the last day and my little nieces were clamoring to go so we toughed it out. Why do they put the pigs in an enclosed hot barn? I got three steps inside and had to turn back. My eyes are still burning. Big grin

Yeah, it has been brutal today on board. I feel like I'm about to have some kind of transcendental hot house experience any second now.... I think the ancients called it "heat stroke".

Not fair to the pigs!

It was 93 degrees up on mtn at 9 am this morning and no wind. Forget weeding today.

A little respite from the heat now in my MTN paradise. Bad thunderstorm and pouring rain. Temp has dropped to 79 and lights flickering on and off. Keep thinking about the 10k plus people at Floyd Fest music festival about 30 minutes south of us further up the MTN. Was worried about them burning up in their tents...worried now that they are getting a deluge of rain! I worry too much as a grandma.

Festival ends tomorrow and a lot of traffic moving up my road the past couple of days. Thankfully, my home is pretty far from the road so the traffic doesn't bother me. Only two ways into there...rt 8 from I81 and Bent MTN Rd. My nephew from Boston came down with his banjo to join the fun. I've never attended it, but did Union Grove, NC Bluegrass Festival (fiddler's convention)during college in the late 70's a couple of years.

Long narrative...lazy and boring day.

ETA: watching "A Fish Called Wanda" and thoroughly enjoying it! Trying to get through all of the Kevin Kline movies. Big fan. Good day to laze and watch movies.

There was an industrial/agricultural swamp cooler blowing into the hog barn. It did nothing good for the stink within.

We're supposed to get some rain and relief tomorrow. Fingers crossed.

Don't you know! Poor little things! I was always the kid that brought home abandoned and mistreated pets! Our little farm in Roanoke County had some pigs a couple of farms over and they sure did smell horribly in the summer. I always went over to check on them just in case! Some odd people on our road and I wanted to make sure they were okay. I am a sucker for defenseless animals. I fostered a horse that needed a home in the winter of 2009. He was very sweet and we finally found a home for him.

So nice that you took your little nieces to the fair! How fun for them.

They had tons of fun, Bent. So many animals to see, bouncy houses, a dog show, horse show, face painting, cotton candy, snowballs. We wore them out real good.

It’s gonna be another hot hot week, but according to the forecast relief is coming on Friday. I really enjoyed this little nor’easter that we had this past week, and another is coming on Friday. But this one is gonna be stronger and last longer. On Saturday, the wind is forecast for 20 MPH from the northeast, and on Sunday 17 MPH from the northeast And the onshore winds are forecast to last the entire week.

But the bad thing is that that means dangerous swimming conditions on a Saturday when hundreds of tourists are getting their first ever look at the ocean, and think that is the norm and head for the ocean, having no idea what a red flag means. Hope nobody drowns.

Aaah, those summertime NE winds. I’ll head over to Shallowbag Bay for some easy wing foiling time. If it’s hot and windless I’ve been efoiling/cold-plunging right at the house. Retired on a sand bar. No hibernating inside and busy beaches avoided in both cases! Theeth smiley

Aaah is right...yes it was hot this weekend, but that breeze when you're facing east (as we are in the Tri) combined with an incredibly smooth (yeah, i know, nothing to ride) and crystal clear Atlantic made for the perfect beach weekend. It was almost cold under shade.

Now, if we could only teach our new visitors this week where the outdoor light switch is.....

Good ole Shallow Bag Bay. Been grounded there on more than one occasion. You'd think a man would think twice about sailing into a Bay named "Shallow Bag" with a 6 1/2 ft draft.....twice. It was a terrible place for drunken sailors before they dredged.

Yeah, the first time was after sailing from Yorktown VA down the coast in through the Oregon inlet at 4AM, also not so smart. I will admit, I've never been accused of genius but I was able to keep the engine running with the rubber palm fuel primer on the reserve gas can after the fuel pump failed by hanging upside down halfway in the bilge squeezing it over and over from the inlet all the way to SBB with my buddy at the helm. By the time we were with in 100 yards of the Marina my forearm was about to explode. I was actually glad we ran aground. We were right bewteen the markers. This was before they spent a couple million dollars opening that channel back up.
