What should we do in October for my parent's 50th?

Hi folks-

My parents recently marked their 50th wedding anniversary and Dad wanted it to stay very low key as my Mom is in her third year with a diagnosis similar to Bruce Willis. She is doing well (no mobility issues) but things are very different now. The whole family will be together in Nags Head for the first weekend in October and I'm trying to find something easy and fun to do in addition to a meal. We are already doing the boil company one night at the house. I'm initially looking into a boat ride but thought I'd ask the group for suggestions.

Thanks so much in advance! Beer Fish Beer Fish

We celebrated my parents’ 50th in 2007 (so long ago!). We rented an 8 bedroom in Duck ( their house was too small for all of us at once) and spent a low key week with my parents, my sis and her fam and my kids. It was wonderful!
I hope your week is blessed with many memories.
We hired a photographer to take pictures. So glad we did that.
I’ll always cherish that time

We've done a couple of sunset cruises on the Downeast Rover which is a lovely sailboat out of downtown Manteo. Sailing without a motor is so relaxing. You can bring your own happy hour, picnic etc. One family brought an entire lasagna dinner with salad, bread and wine. They had a blast! They do daytime cruises as well.

This is a hard one because of personal likes and dislikes.im 62yrs old and I don’t generally keep up with the rest. I will tell you what I liked is a shrimp charter boat but in October I don’t know the rules about shrimping. It’s hands on. We took a charter out of Wanchese. I also love to be canal front with a dock but it all depends on the weather and the water temp, Gid I love crabbing from a dock with fish heads. See it’s the age. I know there is a man on hatteras that takes people to hard to get to sites but I have never tried that yet for shelling or fishing or swimming or a tour.

Thanks so much for the replies really appreciate it. FYI the dates for the Duck Jazz Fest and Bluegrass Fest mentioned are incorrect and happen later in the month of October. Maybe we can bring along a photographer on a sunset cruise!?!?!

Staying in Nags Head you have several nearby Attractions. The Aquarium, Wright Brothers Memorial, Fort Raleigh Historic Site (Not the Lost Colony Play, but the Museum), Elizabethan Gardens, Island Farm, National Wildlife Refuge Welcome Center, Festival Park and also Alligator River Wildlife Refuge. Only a few require a bit of Walking. For Music Lovers in October is the Duck Jazz Festival (10/12 and 13), Outer Banks Seafood Festival (Oct 19) Outer Banks Blue Grass Festival (10/16). As far as Cruises in October some cease to run but you still should have the Dolphin Watch Boats. If you want to drive a bit you can go up to Corolla and see the Whalehead Club, Wildlife Museum and Boat Museum. Have Fun.

Put all your cell phones away and spend time have real conversations and remembering all the great times of your lives together.

I second the Alligator River. After putting it off for years, we were pleasantly surprised/

excellent advice. except for some photos and a bit of video do not waste your experience through a lens. when my daughter was younger I threatened to go home the 2nd week of vacation unless they put their phones away. She knew I was serious. I simply said I didnt pay all this money for 2 weeks at the beach if everyone to be on their phones! And yes it is the memories that last. I still laugh at goofy stuff we did.

Hire a chef to cook dinner. There are several great ones who do a great job. We did it a couple of years for my FIL's birthday. There were 12 of us. My FIL was 97 - great memories.

No matter the season I always enjoy the Elizabethan Gardens. My son and DIL took me once for a butterfly release seminar teaching growing tips for backyard butterflies and delighted me with a butterfly landing in my hands. Congrats to the happy couple. Red rose
