Navy Tower site - Bodie Island

You can't help but see the tall Navy radio tower just north of Bodie Lighthouse. I went there today to help work on a radio repeater the county has there. I often see NASA there and they are there now, so that means a Wallops Island launch coming sometime in the future. This site tracks and can issue the rocket to be destroyed if need be - so the NASA guys there told me before.

Everything is duplicated for back up. Even to antennas.

Oh wow, had no idea NASA used that site as well. Does the Navy own the tower? I know that's one of our P25/VIPER sites .

The Navy owns the tower but I am not sure what is on it other than county and state radios and microwaves. As you know the Navy once had antennas at the very top to communicate with ships and planes way offshore. Those have been replaced with satellites and the Navy has said they might reduce the height someday which would change things a lot there.

The NASA equipment shows up whenever launches are planned from Wallops and disappear when none are planned for launch soon. This may be from the Sounding rocket launched a week or so ago.

We got the 145.290 and the Carolina 440 system repeaters up and running again.
