Today marks the anniversary of the Ash Wednesday storm in 1962. OBX and VA Beach were devastated by probably the greatest storm in recent memory. A good documentary of the event is the book "The Ash Wednesday Storm" by David Stick of Manteo. Also lots of pictures can be found by Google search of Ash Wednesday Storm.

It was a few years before my time, but I've seen lots of pictures. Terrible storm for sure, particular cutting through the island about where "haulover" is.

Devastated Bethany Beach in Delaware. There are still plaques up around town where 'things' once stood.

Our family started coming to OBX in 1959 to Kitty Hawk. Beach was big and we stayed in a group of cottages 3 together. My dad put money down on the one we stayed at then and again in 1961. These 3 cottages disappeared in that storm been in KDH since. The picture always made my kids afraid seeing it and we were to drive to the Wright Memorial if something like that came in. Not sure how fast the car or us would get there!!

Just be glad that clown on facebook OBXlex was not around then.
BTW the ash wed picture many associate with the storm is also a fake but a fake that was used for a picture project. Below is a link to the OBX thread where our own EveT told about how that picture came to be.

Also if you ever dig a bit at the haulover site on Hatteras you can find the cars that were dropped there after the storm.

I remember getting water from tanks on the side of the road that summer.

Re the referenced pic (heavily edited as it were) - there is one place in Portugal (Nazare) that is oft photographed, the surf is so monstrous it looks "fake"...but it's not:

The picture may be a fake, but the 3 cottages one of which my father was purchasing were swept away. Nothing fake re that.
