We are arriving on August 1 and staying oceanfront in Waves. We have never been to this part of the Island and I’m curious about the ferry to Ocrakoke. It sounds like an interesting day trip but the schedule posted online is a little confusing.

It’s a free ferry that can fill up quickly in the busy season. You’ll want to get there early in order to catch the trip you want. The inlet is gradually widening and shallowing so the crossing takes 45 minutes to an hour. The village at Ocracoke is on the other end of the island from Hatteras Inlet, about 15 minutes by car.

The times under Hatteras are when a ferry leaves Hatteras side.

The times under Ocracoke are when one leaves the Ocracoke side. There are several ferries. I just took the round trip last Saturday. They are PUNCTUAL. You won't catch it if you're even a few minutes late. Trip was about an hour both ways.

There is also a passenger (only) ferry that takes you right to Ocracoke village. There is a free shuttle to get you around town or you can rent a golf cart. If you just want to visit the village it is a better alternative. Information at:
