Corolla in late August/early September?

Our May vacation week was transferred to the week before Labor Day. We've only visited the Banks during the spring shoulder season and prefer the quieter time at the beach. We usually spend the majority of our time at the beach and only one day out for shopping, etc. We will be staying at the same house we've stayed in May for the past couple years.

What can we expect to see in Corolla during late August/early September on the beach? We'll be staying in the Ocean Sands area.

The biggest differences that I can see (and will miss from shoulder season visits):

Saturday traffic will be heavier

The beach will be more populated

Stores/restaurants will have more traffic

Hurricane evacuations will be possible

Obviously, summer season is preferred by most people who visit the Banks, so there what are your favorite things about late summer vacations on the beach?

Anything Corolla specific?

Thanks for any tips and advice to prepare for a summer versus spring vacation!

We do two weeks in September beginning with Labor Day Weekend. We love that time of year, but the last two years did come with evacuations - but that’s what trip insurance is for. It is usually less populated, fewer teenagers, more younger families, beaches not as crowded, less traffic and very little issues eating out. We really don’t know what to expect this year, but we’re definitely lookin forward to it.

We have been staying in Ocean Sands/Ocean Lake for the last several years. We do like to do South Nags Head in May, but we’re cancelled out this year.

I think it will be more busy this year. Seems every week since June is similar To a peak week this summer. With many classes and schools going remote, more people may be there than normal. Usually things are slowing down then but who k oas this year.

Thanks for the responses! We are cautiously excited to see the beach/ocean in the summer time. The only time we've visited the OBX, the water temp has been pretty chilly!

It is hard to change our expectations as we have our memories of what this house has been like and have loved all our vacations here, so it's hard to think of it as being totally different due to the different time of year!

When we've gone in May, most of the houses surrounding have been vacant and the area has been very quiet and peaceful. With the high occupancy rates this year, we'll definitely have to readjust our expectations!

That sounds fun! How much different is the warmth of the sun?

We go down every year during the last week of august. This year since labor day is so late we won’t be down until august 29th. We love
That week. Very quiet! Beaches are nearly empty, stores and restaurants not as crowded as earlier in the season.

Obviously huge difference in weather but also different species regarding fishing if you're into that. Much better IMHO.

Compared to May it can be hot. The sand might be a wee bit warm depending on the day. September is wonderful on the banks. The water temp is superb.

You should consider an October trip one year as well if you like the air a little cooler. October is much like May in many ways, but with much warmer water temps if you like to take a dip.
