Then and now

I hope that this is the right place to post this. It seemed to be. The old pictures thread seemed to pertain more to businesses and things that aren’t there anymore. I felt this was more personal.

I’m gearing up for a vacation on Hatteras Island in August and was feeling nostalgic.

Our grandchildren are the 4th generation In our family to make memories at Hatteras.
My husband started coming literally in utero in the 1960s, and we are lucky enough today to still be able to vacation on the island with four generations of our family.

I am absolutely loving sharing it all with my grandkids.

Anyway, here is a “ then and now “ . It’s like history repeating itself ! Pictures taken 29 years apart.
Anyone else have any “ then and now “ pics of your family ?
The oldest pictures of my husbands family are at his parents house right now.

Only 3 of the 4 generations are depicted in these particular photos.
My husbands parents aren’t pictured.

My husband, myself and our baby daughter in 1990,
And my grown daughter, her husband, her baby daughter and toddler son in 2019.

My daughter and her own daughter look very much alike.
In the 1990 picture, I have the long dark hair and white tank top. I am a grandma now. My daughter is a baby in the 1990 picture that I am holding.

Fast forward to the 2019 pictures, my daughter is grown up in the long striped pant suit. She is now holding her own baby girl with the “ pebbles style” pigtail.
My daughter is in the other 2019 picture with her husband , daughter and son.

But if you meant my daughter looks like her own daughter, absolutely ! Her mini me smiley Red heart

Thank you all for the great comments ! Red heart

80s hair in 1990!

You betcha ! That was a hard habit to break, and I had some BIG hair lol ! That picture doesn’t do the height of my hair justice , that Ferry wind was blowing it all around. Aqua Net was no match for the Hatteras winds !
And then there’s my husbands 80s short shorts and 80s glasses Big grin

Big BIG changes to Hatteras from the sixties. We have three generations sitting in our house now but I wish my girls could experience the Hatteras I remember from the 60’s and early 70’s.

Thanks for sharing.

I didn’t go until I married my husband ( (1990) but he was born in January of ‘69 and went from summer of 1969 on, every year. . He said They used to camp and rent very cheap cottages as they were on a budget. I don’t think the grand houses existed back then either.
He remembers riding his bike all around the island unsupervised with his big sisters. They would always ride their bikes to “ The Hatterasman “ for a hamburger, and his family got their groceries at Connors. He remembers Lee Robinson‘S General Store When it literally was a general store.
I wish I would’ve experienced that as well.
However I’m glad that I started in 1990 because even then, things were so different. One of my favorites that you can’t do anymore was riding on the tailgate of our Bronco on the beach for miles and miles Thumbs up

Your husband and I experienced the same things. What a great time to be here.

My sister and I would ride our bikes to the lighthouse and climb it at dusk. Many times we would sit at the top all alone when the light came on. Eventually a friendly ranger would show up and tell us it was closing time.

The other great memory was crabbing and collecting oysters with my dad at the Canadian Hole. Not a single person in site. I can’t bring myself to visit there after what it has become.

Last evening I let my girls ride on the tailgate while leaving the beach at ramp 25.

That’s bitter sweet. Such a great time it was back then. It’s sad to see things change . I guess it is unavoidable. Your stories made me smile smiley
Your girls will remember that tailgate ride forever Thumbs up
