too many butts

i am venting - i was at my oceanfront rental and there must have been over 500 cigarette butts littered all over the yard, by the outdoor grill and even on the beach. i could smell the remnants of smoke in the air. my husband ended up collecting all the butts for the trash so we could enjoy our home. so whats the deal? is it so hard to get a plastic cup and put your butts out in there and dispose of? Geesh! How rude and disgusting! And it really irked me to see that they continued to litter the beach with them. hello!! they don't break down. I don't want to step on your discarded cigarette butt that was in your mouth!

Now that I am done venting, this is a gentle reminder to kindly dispose of your cigarette butts properly and considerately not sometimes but ALWAYS.

What Babylin said!!! Some smokers are just so thoughtless, please, be thoughtful when you are at the beach!

I’d also add that if you are walking your pup on the beach and he/she poops - c’mon, pick it up! Covering/kicking over w sand doesn’t do squat, the next windy day just uncovers it!!!

I can’t agree more, with both the cigarette butts. I can’t stand seeing them over the beach and worse, washing up where kids are playing.

And please pick up after your dog. For everyone’s sake.

Man, this reminds me of last August. Family had an oceanfront place in Nags Head, around MP 12. We would set up in the morning, and were amazed at the people that would come down and set up, literally 6 feet from us. (My wife and I are used to Tri Vilaages.) One day, this group sets up right by us, and we hear that sound, you know, when someone is pounding a pack of cigarettes in their hand. My wife and I just look at each other, both thinking yuck. And hey, if you're a smoker, you have every right to smoke there, but boy, if you're not a smoker, that sucks!

And like the OP said, clean up, whether you're a smoker, dog walker, drinker, whatever.

May i add vaping to the list!! We had a young couple and their small kids beside us last year on the beach. They would get set up then fire up their peace pipes.I don't know what flavor they were vaping but it smelled horrible!! Those poor little kids had to play right in the middle of the fog!

Since I moved down here I've made a point of never throwing my butts out the truck window or on the ground ever. I put them in my ashtray in the truck or if I'm out and about I'll just squeeze them out and put them in my back pocket. Makes me smell even worse but I don't want to litter the island.

I never understood why cigarette butts aren't considered litter.

Darn it Nicki, now I have to tell you the stupid joke you reminded me of:

I pirate walks into a bar at the wharf one afternoon. The bar keep says: "Sir, did you know you have a ship's wheel tied to your privates?" The pirate replies: "Argggh, it drives me nuts".....

I was a smoker for years and it has always annoyed me to see people just throw them when they are done. As someone else said, I would just snuff them out and throw it in a garbage can if I was somewhere with no ashtray. When we are at the beach or rental house we'd just use a gatorade (or similar) bottle with some water in it then throw it away later. Its not hard to find a way to throw them away.

While we are venting...

Turn down your music on the beach. If I can hear it 50 feet away, it is probably too loud for the beach.

I totally agree especially on dog droppings. Watched a couple walk a dog right by us and let the dog go and then just walk on down the beach. - Just two weeks ago in KDH. Wow!

Y'all be safe.

Mike

Moved to MA in 2003. A friend has been saying he is giving up cigarettes for 17 years.

I buy him a carton 5 times a year on my way north.

The humor is appreciated. But I usually fish the riptide in the sandbar and try to teach people that where my line goes is a dangerous place to swim without a boogie board or something else that floats.

This topic is timely. We went out on ramp 48 this morning and headed towards 49. Found a spot with about 100 yards between vehicles. For us that’s still crowded but this summer has been horribly busy and we need to take what we can get.

Didn’t take long for us to get surrounded by vehicles around 30’ on both sides. On one side was a slob of a woman who chain smoked all day and threw her butts both in the ocean and the beach. I politely asked her to stop but she told me off then had her trash of a husband come over where we had a lively conversation. You can’t argue with ignorance and stupidity.

On the other side of me was a family blaring music and burying their dogs crap instead of cleaning it up. I didn’t say anything to this family but we did swim through their fishing lines when they set their sand spikes directly in front of us. They stopped their fishing once we were pulling on their lines.

We purposely stay as far from others as we can, but people have completely lost all manners and have no beach etiquette.

Every time we have gone to 48 this year it has been a madhouse. I do know that I am blessed to be able to be on Hatteras as much as I have, but today I lost my patience with all the clueless slobs I have encountered this year.

We were able to salvage the day by picking up fish tocos from Buxton Munch for an early dinner then headed to 25 where we got about a 1/4th of a mile separation from other vehicles. Got some evening swimming in with my daughters and then my girls caught a good number of mullet and spot.

It’s tough to have a bad day on Hatteras.

Thinking we are going to stick to the northern Hatteras beaches instead of frisco for a while.

Pic of our evening on 25.

Thanks for the pics. Reminds me of my family and friends. We love sunset fishing and then eating dinner on the beach. It's a first night tradition.for us.
