Just back from 2 weeks in Avon

Quick background, this is our 17 year going to either Avon or Frisco......... Always last week of June and first week of July. I have never posted a trip report. While I enjoy reading them, posting them is just not my thing. However, This year I thought I would report on few ancillary points.

1. Just about everything is open. Most of the restaurants were seating folks inside and outside. All restaurants had call in/pick up service available. On the call in and pick up front, some were better at it then others.....Makes sense as its "new this season". In Avon, Bro's Sandwich place was the best at it by far.

2. Without igniting the mask debate fire, I will say that many, many people were NOT wearing masks. Many store employees ( not that we went into a bunch of stores) were not wearing a mask. This bothered me more than the general public not wearing one in that those workers are exposed to EVERYONE that enters the store and indoors to boot.... I would think they would wear a mask. We saw zero anger or violence towards those not wearing masks.

3. We had less interaction with people in general this year than any year in the past. But, the interactions we did have were the same as always, kind people having general conversations about non specific topics. NO, the "locals" DO NOT hate you. They are not angry with you. They are not harassing you and not going out of their way to intimidate or bother you in any way. YOUR VEHICLE IS SAFE!

4. Frisco beach, behind the Billy Mitchell airport, was more crowded than ever before........ Having said that, it was not as crowded as the beaches you are seeing on the news packed with people blanket to blanket and there was still room for plenty more people.

4. It was very easy to have a good time, have our "outer banks vacation" and maintain social distancing as we felt necessary.....In the villages, social distancing is kind of "baked in"...It's one of the things we have always loved about being there. No huge crowds, no rush to do anything.

Finally, We fully enjoyed the vacation. Having the entire family in one place at the same time for two weeks is just good for the soul. It was a different experience this year, but not so different that it was foreign. My wife and kids missed shopping (in general we tried not to go inside too many places) and we all missed dining out.

Okay, this is really the conclusion this time....... If you are on the fence about your trip, I say go......The beach is the beach. The people are the same as they have always been. Keep the TV turned off. Stay off your news feed and enjoy the time with your family and/or friends. Salt water, fresh air, family and friends. I think we could all use a dose of this medication about now!!

Peace and dancing bananas to you all. Banana Banana Banana

Good summary. We were there as well but for one week. I don't think I noticed any employees not wearing a mask. In fact I only noticed one couple in a store (shoppers, not employees) who were without them. Not saying you're wrong, but I didn't happen to see it in my limited outings.

Agreed on the Billy Mitchell beach being crowded. I saw a report that the Point may open back up for drive on soon so that should help alleviate some of the volume. But like you said, even with that many people we were never so close to our neighbors that it was even remotely an issue.

We also had good experiences with take out from Bros as well as Gidgets. And the guys at Surf's Up seafood were busy as well. Call ahead if you're planning on picking up steamed seafood late in the day.

We're going back in a couple weeks. Last week's experience only reassured me and is making me look forward to it even more.

Did you go food shopping in OBX or did you bring everything with you?

We brought more with us this year than we do in a "normal" year.....including all paper products. However, we did use Connors (in Frisco) online ordering and pick up service. Great experience. It was very much like instacart, (except you have to pick up) including a couple of call backs to my wife when they needed to substitute items.

On the few occasions we needed to grab something quick from the market, we went to food lion late in the day..........It was clean, not overly crowded and seemed well stocked. Although, we went in for specific items and not shopping, so there may have shortages of some items that we just didn't notice.

The guys at Surfs Up are jerks. I don't buy from them anymore. Sunrise Market all the way. He's helpful, pleasant and has the same prices.

Can someone weigh in on Surfs Up? We are staying across the street and planned on buying a boil from them during our trip. The google reviews are excellent.

Heading home from our beach week all the way down at Hatteras Village. Wonderful weather! Lots of my family from 7yrs to 92yrs. Beach in front of our house wasn’t crowded at all even by Hatteras standards. It was more crowded down at Ocracoke then I’ve ever seen it. 30 straight years coming to OBX! This was due I think to north Ocracoke beaches/ramps being cut off at high tide so more people were further down. Still not that many people. Maybe 50 ft between families. A fabulous trip as usual. We have already booked for next summer. Can’t wait!!!

Go for it!

Great reviews, and I wouldn't judge anything on one negative post.

No matter where I stay on Hatteras Island, the only places I will buy my seafood is from Harbor House Seafood and Risky Business Seafood in Hatteras Village. It's worth the drive from Avon for Miss Vicki's enchiladas, and Risky's smoked tuna spread.

I have been a customer of Surf’s Up for the last six years (been there at least 20 times) and all I can say are great things (same for Sunrise as well). As others have mentioned please don’t let one bad review affect your decision. Both could use your/our business and I pretty much guarantee you that you will be happy with both. Biggest difference is Surf’s Up carries blue crabs and I would give the edge to Sunrise for fresh fish. Hope u have a great vacation!

Yup and the history of that poster is without a doubt a troll. Just ignore. This is where moderation is needed. This new user has no knowledge of the troll and thinks the post is real.

Also forgot to mention Surf’s Up does/makes/provides steamer pots and Sunrise does not (they give you directions and carry the ingredients to do it yourself).

I have been reading some of his less than desirable comments for sometime, that’s why I wanted him to weigh in. The vast majority of the reviews praised Surfs Up. I plan on buying seafood from them early during my trip. If it is good, I plan on buying from them multiple times because of their proximity to our house.

Just saw all the replies about seafood markets. We went to Surf's Up twice when we were there the week after the 4th. On the 2nd visit, they couldn't steam anything for us because they had too many orders stacked up. Not a big deal and it was only reinforcing what my wife had told me earlier about calling ahead. We bought from them and cooked it ourselves. The guys in there were nothing but nice to us. I've been to Sunrise multiple times in the past and liked them a lot too. We've also done Harbor House and Risky Business. All great. Since I've never had a bad experience, I tend to go to the one that's closest. Though we sometimes go out of our way to get smoked tuna at Risky Business. Figuring out which of these places to try is probably one of the best dilemmas to have. Enjoy!
