Hey all... Because this movie was recently mentioned, and for those not stuck in the kitchen yet... Das Boot is on TCM (commercial free) tomorrow afternoon at 3:30-6:15 pm. Excellent movie. Well worth watching. Or DVR-ing for a future watch. Enjoy & Happy Turkey Day!!!

Thanks, Phoebe, for the heads-up. Will check it out. Not only do I not have a cell phone, I do not follow cable, which my better half takes care of (and she has a cell, as do my kids).

I believe we get TCM. Saw the original in subtitles in 1981 at a movie theater in Upstate NY long since gone, and would like to see it again. Really good, nearly priceless, stuff, as I recall, and I would encourage all to take a look if you get TCM.

A distant cousin to Tom Clancy's Red October with Sean Connery, only much better than Red October. Top shelf.

And maybe not so atypical of German U-boat activity off the OBX coast during WWII.

Happy Turkey Day to you, too, Phoebe!!

Many thanks for this alert! Das Boot is a real treat!

Das Boot taught me that I never want to be a submariner.

If you have surround sound or a good audio system hooked into your TV make sure it is on.....the sound is incredible.

Set to record, thanks for the head's up! I've never seen this movie, but my old boss served on a sub and he discusses this movie all the time. It's been on my mental watch list for years along with 17,000 other things.

Comcast up here in MA recently dropped TCM. Used to have MGM, but that was substituted for TCM, and I liked TCM better. Now have neither. Sad smiley

Wonderful movie. Very intense and great cinematography. It keeps you captivated. One of the "I can't stop watching" best of all time. I listened (feel like I can speak German now, lol) to and watched today while cooking dinner.

Just finished watching. I watched while working on dinner. Made the kitchen time pass quickly, and I almost burned a pie because I was into it and distracted. Excellent movie!

Taped it and watched it last night before I went to bed. Even better the 2nd time around. Loved the scene where the diesels finally fired on the Mediterranean, that long line of exposed rocker arms coming to life as the boat surfaced and raced back to France. My recollection in an earlier post was that the engines fired on the bottom of the Mediterranean, but the firing was on the surface.

Those sonar pings and the subsequent depth charges must have been terrifying.

I don't recall, did the Chief survive the bombing and strafing in the French pen at the end?

Thank you, Phoebe, for letting us know about this!

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!

Was just telling my son how good it was, and that its DVR'ed if interested. He said "I've seen it." Huh? I was like 10 or 11 when it was made, how did you see it? After some confusion and back and forth about the storyline, it seems that Hulu made a reboot mini-series of Das Boot a while back. Crazy. Everything is a reboot these days!

And never as good as the original! Battlestar Galactica came close, but didn't top the original. Never heard of a Das Boot mini series.

I finally was able to watch this myself again last night. (Had seen it 5 or 6 times before.) Forgot just how good it really is. No CGI or special effects needed. Great acting. Crunch- Envious that I never got to see it on the big screen like you. Would have really added to the "claustrophobic" feel of the movie. Mstazew- Now you only have 16,999 things left on your mental list of things to do. niki- I'm amazed that you watched a sub-titled movie while working in the kitchen. Glad you didn't burn the pie! Hope you all had a great turkey day!
