Flagger Force

Good afternoon folks. If you dislike a certain post, in a thread, you can flag down that particular post. You don’t have to remove an entire thread, just because you and 4 others dislike a particular comment. Don’t you think you are implementing a “My way or the highway” attitude? Some of the members here were enjoying a commentary today, but you flagged down the entire thread. Oh well, I guess we’ll start a new one.

Wow!

A site I frequent is stackoverflow.com. You can flag posts for various reasons, but your name is shown there with the flag. It keeps people honest and accountable. I think seeing flaggers tied to a post placeholder for the removed post would be nice. Will is probably intimately familiar with stackoverflow and their flow.

I thought Will was going to modify the down votes to be offset by the up votes. Guess not. Watch how fast the board mommies take this one down. Not worth posting anymore.

There's something else going on here. Apparently my profile was one that was flagging posts, as I got a private message yesterday asking why I was flagging posts that weren't against the rules. My answer? I wasn't. I don't remember the last time I flagged something here, and those of you who are here on a regular basis probably don't associate my profile w/ any contentious back and forth on the forum. As soon as I got that message, I promptly logged off, and I just changed my password as well.

Something's off on the site. Will had contacted me too for excessive flagging. I don't recall ever flagging a post. So something's not right.

Good insight exville. Maybe some identities have been hacked and cloned. It may also be time for Will to run an IP Address comparison to see if any persons possess multiple screen names.

Countdown: One, two, three....Everybody change their passwords.
(At the risk of being flagged down, it could be those pesky Ruskies again!)

Geez, they took down the entire thread about the boards being cleaned up. That's kinda rude.

It could be possible that one person has made five separate accounts and just uses them to delete anything they want. This would be traceable via an IP search, but Will would have to do that.

Appreciate the insights SPQ, exvile, and craicncrabs.

Kudos to those of you who were contacted about flagging and have changed your passwords. Good job!

Something is definitely off here. Maybe force a password reset for everyone.

I like Ars Techinca's self moderation scheme. It has both up votes and down votes. if the sum reaches a certain negative threshold, the post is hidden (you have the option to view it if you want) and a moderator will look at it. If it's against the rules, the post is removed and a warning is given. Users will receive bans (temporary and then longer) if they continue.

Now that I think about it, there is precedent on these boards for one person using multiple accounts to troll, although not to flag.

Here is Will's thread from this past summer regarding it:

Click to follow link...

SA still uses moderators for their forums. Members click a "report" button that flag the post to a moderator. The post is then reviewed and if you're being a jerk you either get probation ranging from 6 hours to 30 days and can't post for that length of time, or a ban depending on the severity and repeat offenses.

SA is behind a 10$ paywall though, so it costs you 10$ to register an account so you can post. The paywall helps keep out people who just want to be a jerk. Even if your account is banned you are allowed to pay another 10$ to create a new one. Sort of like a tax for being a jerk.

Unless you are REALLY egregious and then they perma-ban your IP and MAC address.

I think it might be time for an investigation into what is going on here and some changes to the flagging system.

This is interesting.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but in the past, if a post inside a thread was hit 5 times, that post disappeared...but tge rest of the thread remained until Will either locked it or deleted it completely. ???

If this is a Big Five issue every single reply in a thread has been flagged 5 times. Or a hacker...that means someone is signing in and flagging..signing out then again again and repeating the process five times. That seems excessive even for a bored troll.

Im with Squid. Nefarious activity is afoot. I trust Will will figure it out though.

Oh and another thought...most of us longtimers know the original Big Five group has vanished and maybe we have a new Big Five. Coincidentally, this started after the recent political stuff, when the topic of how the board regulates itself came up again. Think its a possibilty. Maybe someone got a burr up their butt. Too many possibilities.

If five accounts all flag the very first post of the thread, the entire thread will be deleted. As the original post of the thread is now gone and that deletes the whole thread.

If five accounts all flag a reply to the original post, then only that reply will be deleted and the rest of the thread remains intact.

It will be interesting to see if this thread suddenly goes missing, too.

A little plug for 1Password...

I have been using 1Password for 10 years and love it. I have 97 login credentials in my vault now and every password is different and they are all up to 20 characters long with symbols and crazy stuff. Some are less in length and less complicated due to the password rule restrictions of the site they are for. It has browser extension and acts as a keychain source in iOS so it's super simple to login to everything even though you'd never remember the password in a million years. It also cross references your logins to the haveibeenpwned.com database to let you know if your credentials have been compromised in any of the big data breaches we've all heard about. One of the recent articles critical of Disney+ and its launch issues pointed out that ~6,000 accounts had been "hacked" and available for sale on the dark web already. My guess... those accounts were using the same email and password they use for everything else and their credentials were already long since compromised.

Ok, plug over. There are others like KeePass, etc. and all have similar features. I highly recommend using one. It's peace of mind if there's ever a data breach with one of the companies you deal with that the credentials you use for their services are never reused anywhere else so no need to worry about what else is exposed.
