Fresh Catch Seafood in Wanchese

I've always been a big fan of O'Neals as a place to get a great lunch and stock up on whatever looks good before heading home. But I was curious when I saw a hand-painted sign just past just the turn at Harbor Road advertising tuna and shrimp.

There is a retail counter at the back of the parking lot. Inside there were women cleaning and sorting shrimp in a little covered pier that jutted out to the water. I came home with 25 pounds of greentails and a nice tuna loin that was fresher than anything I have ever bought anywhere, period. There's nothing better than buying directly from watermen.

How big were the shrimp? Were they able to pack it for the trip back?

Fresh Catch is fairly new and is run by relatives of the Daniels Family who used to own Wanchese Seafood (Captain Malc's and Fisherman's Wharf building) before they sold out to the Canadian Firm, Cook Industries. It is on Harbor Road on the left side just after you turn off the "Main" Road. If you get to Just Right you missed it. Great people and place but the variety will be very limited to what is currently available and dependent what they are packing out. "In Season" they provide fish cleaning for your catches and will ice for travel.

50lbs of wild-caught 16/20 shrimp for like 375$?

Could someone please explain to me why I live in the frozen wasteland that is Northeast PA?

What am I doing with my life?

Well...for one, you're not gonna be spending your weekend feeling like a character in Das Boot

I had to google Das Boot. Looks like a film from 1981 (I wasn't born yet) about a German submarine crew. Not sure I get the reference Sad smiley

For a good potion of the film, U-96 is smack dab in the middle of a several week long wicked storm....water everywhere - mostly where it's not supposed to be.

I got unsorted head-on from them for $4/pound and they actually cut me a break on that because I bought so much. Since most of the weight is in the bodies and very little in the heads, I made out like a bandit. I popped the heads and rinsed in cold salted water and froze on baking sheets when I got home. The little ones went into a bag to be used in stuff like shrimp tacos and shrimp burgers, the bigger ones went into separate bags. I honestly don't care about mixed sizes. Turns out they all taste like shrimp.

And yes, they packed them up in my cooler and filled it to the top with ice. Even helped me get it in the back of my vehicle. Incredibly nice people, including the woman who I believe runs the place. It was really funny to see her with her hair and makeup perfect, while she paced back and forth in Wanchese slippers, driving a hard bargain with whoever was on the other end of the phone. I froze some of the tuna loin when I got home but kept enough for a big steak in a ziploc on ice till last night, when I seared it. It literally tasted like it had come right out of the water. And get this: 7 bucks a pound!

I liked that movie about the Unterseeboot. I hope I won't feel like that with the storm, but I am not happy to see 50+ mph winds EVER!

Agreed about the original German Das Boot. Saw it in the movie theatre when it first came out. I could NEVER make it on a submarine, not for a second. Here's an imdb link: Click to follow link...

Same here, obxmini. One of my favorites, especially the scene when the engines (diesels ?) finally fire on the bottom of the Mediterranean. Great stuff!
