There is one called the Wash House in Manteo. This year our spread has no washer/dryer, so we will inevitably pay them a visit. Probably hit the aquarium or the waterfront afterwards.
When i was a kid, washers in the cottages were unheard of. So about midweek my mother, grandmother and assorted aunts (the grown men were playing golf or fishing- different times) would assemble the dirty laundry and drag my cousin and I over to Manteo. This was always followed by a stop at the dreaded Cloth Barn. This delayed our beach fun even more and my cousin and I still laugh about being dragged to that chamber of horrors.
So this will be a throwback to the past of sorts. Thank God the Cloth Barn is no longer there.
Ahhh the Cloth Barn's owner was a good friend. I miss him not the business though.
Well considering the joy it brought to the sewing fanatics in my family, he ran a very good business.
Simply not the place for an 8 and 10 year old to spend an hour when the beach beckoned. We were so bored we used to run around and crawl under the rolls of fabric. My mother was not amused.
