Farmers Markets

Best Farmers Markets on OBX?

We've stopped at Grandy's, Morris's, and maybe one other on the way in, but very limited selection, a lot of which was shipped in from places like CA. Used to be a co-op in a strip mall in KH with some fresh stuff, but that is long since gone. Manteo market was limited last year.

Fresh sweet corn, tomatoes, basil, and the like?

Manteo's Farmer's market has a very good real farmer that brings in good produce. This is on Saturday morning's...starting at 8AM until 12pm. You can read more on Face Book if you would like. There is another farm stand just past the intersection of 64 on the way to Wanchese that is an organic farm stand - I'm sorry I don't know the exact times. It is held on Saturdays and Wednesdays. Believe it or not, I have not yet been to this one, though I certainly plan to.

I'm sure someone else can fill you in on the Dowdy Park, Nags Head, farmer's market.

A few weeks ago we were coming back from Norfolk and hit Grandy's and got some excellent corn and peaches...as well as some superior romaine lettuce. I know, I know - romaine lettuce...? But honestly, it has been quite a challenge to find any good romaine down here lately.

I don’t know where you’re staying but Avon has a farmers market, open on Tuesdays from June thru earlySeptember, hours are in am only, maybe 9-1.
Andin Hatteras Vlg theres “Sticky Bottom Produce”, which I’ve often frequented. Great stuff.

Thanks, obxmini and judyk. Grandy's was great the first couple of years but has been hit and miss the last few. Maybe bad timing on our part. Powell's is the other one out there I couldn't think of earlier.

Will check out the others when we get there in August. Wasn't aware of those in Dowdy Park and Wanchese. Both sound interesting.

We're up near KH, but will be getting down to Avon and Hatteras at least once to catch the Miss Hatteras for some fishing. Maybe we can coordinate with some Farmers Markets.

We stop at Morris and have always found some good items. We’ve even picked up wine, jam, salsa and peach pie.

Yes, my wife likes Morris's, too. I like the old tractors!

Always stop at Grandys on our way in the end of April.. They always have the best just picked strawberries!! We get them, plus grapes, peanuts & a few other things. Since we spend the first two days in KDH at a motel, we can't buy too much! But it's a great place!

I forgot about the peanuts. My wife likes to get them there, too, and their fudge. I always pick up a couple of their used peach picking baskets and use them for grocery shopping. Everybody here in NYC loves the baskets!

And I usually get some of their butter beans. Yummy with butter!

By the way, I need to correct my remarks about the Manteo Farmer's Market - there were three different fruit and vegetable (and eggs and more) farm stands downtown this morning... So definitely check it out for produce. They also have baked goods, art and more....oh and the SPCA usually has a spot where they will give your dog a nice bath for a donation. smiley with shades It was beautiful down there this morning - nice breeze and quite a bit of shade, as well, under the trees, right along the boardwalk by Marshes Lighthouse.

P.S. Facebook is big down here. Unfortunately it is often the main way of knowing what is going on. Here is their link: Click to follow link...

Thanks, Obxmini. We'll check it out when we are there. We were right near the lighthouse last year, but not on a Saturday AM. We'll be there the end of August.

What can you tell us about the Pioneer theater? Have always wanted to go, but never quite got there.

The Pioneer is family owned and operated. Here's a description: Click to follow link... It's very reasonable.. I think it is only $8 a ticket? Check your PM box. It's one deep theater of pretty good size. Due to taste in films, we've only gone once but it certainly was handy! smiley with shades
