Made it down Friday. First time on OBX. Love our vacation rental home. Excited to get out and look around this area tomorrow after a day at the beach. Usually vacation in NMBSC but think I'm going to like this beach area a lot too! Listening to those waves crash now!

Spiaz1, will be curious as to how you compare OBX to MB. Never been to MB, but thought about it and then fell in love with OBX.

Done MyrtleBeach for many many years
Always wanted to give OBX a try and so far it's been good. It is different in that Myrtle is approx 60+ miles of High Rises with multiple indoor and outdoor pools with several lazy rivers and mini water parks for kids at each of the resorts. Most of the resorts have restaurants, loungesnor bars. There is multiple by passes now to help curb the traffic depending on which resort you go to. Now on each those bypases there are just as mini stores, restaurants, theaters and music venues or dinner theaters. It really depends on what you like. So far OBX seems to be more beach homes, very little hotels, definitely no high rises. Traffic is not bumper to bumper inOBX the way it is in MyrtleBeach and the OBX beaches aren't as crowded. We stay in the North section of Myrtle because its family oriented. It's a completely different look than Myrtle Beach. OBX is a shorter drive for us by about 3 hrs. Sadly we hit traffic and wrecks outside of NewPort News and it took us about 1.5 hours to travel the equivalent of about two blocks.

Spiaz1,
Yup, OBX is much less of a drive for us, too, and that is a main reason we ended up there the first year, and not on MB. Would have been 5-6 more hours driving for us. Beaches are wonderful, area is not over-built and commercial, and very relaxing for us and our kids. Regular folks where we feel comfortable and welcome. This will be our 5th year back in August, and we're counting the days. Seems to be a well-kept secret, in part because it's a bit off the beaten path. Used to vacation in the northeast, but got tired of the cold water, and had enough of Wildwood boardwalk and water park (although the kids loved it). Never seem to tire of the surf at OBX.

Looking forward to it, Shari! I'm driving my wife and kids crazy by reminding them every few days of how many days until we leave, and how we are going to drive all night and get there about 8 AM. We're under a month and counting down.

Shari V...
Use to live in New England 15 mo sites from the ocean. Tired of the brutal cold. I'm a southern gal and just couldn't connect up there and hated the brutal temps of winter and how long the winters were compared to where I'm from. Hubby is a native Bostonian and even he didnt like it. Beautiful coastline up there but found beaches closed at dusk, unless you were vacationing directly there on the ocean. Pay to park too on most of them I visited. The Cape is beautiful. A lot of the New England coast is rocky. Water temps cold. Again, beautiful - But I'll take the OBX beaches and any further south than I will up North. Yes,MB is commercialized. The OBX is not at all and I hope it stays that way. So far I like the Southern Shores, Duck and Corolla area. Headed to Hatterass, Rodanthe, Wanches, Ocracoke, etc later on. Gotta see those lighthouses. A favorite thing of ours to do. OBX has some great ones.

Couldn't agree with you more, Spiaz1. I don't mind the coldish NYC winters, actually enjoy it, but I have no use for cold vacation water. Yup, beautiful, rocky coast, but if you can't get into the water and enjoy it, what's the point? Never made much sense to me. OBX is just right. We're only there for a few weeks each year, but feels like a 2nd home.
