Tortugas' Lie

3014 S Virginia Dare Trail
Nags Head, NC 27959

A locals' favorite on the Outer Banks, this small, upbeat eatery is housed in a turquoise and white cottage across from the ocean near a great surf break. Tortuga's features an enclosed porch furnished with handmade wooden booths, table seating, and an expanded bar that seats more than two dozen people. There's a sand volleyball court out back where pickup games are played -- and watched from the outdoor picnic tables. The bartenders and wait staff are some of the friendliest folk we know. The creatively concocted food is good and the atmosphere inside is fun and casual, with turtle-themed batiks hanging from the white walls and more than 100 license plates, some with pretty unusual personal messages, from across the country tacked to the low ceiling beams.

The menu here offers quick-fried fish bites, supersize fish and black bean burritos, sandwiches, seafood flavored with outrageous spices, and a full raw bar. The French fries are among the best on the Banks. Dinner entrees include pork medallions, steak stir-fries, just-off-theboat tuna steaks, succulent shrimp, and pasta plates. Most meals come with rice and beans, but the cooks will substitute fries if you ask. The daily specials are tempting; sushi is served on Wednesday nights, and the place usually is packed with locals. Desserts are delicious and change daily. The full bar offers loads of specialty drinks such as Black and Tans, a combination of Bass Ale and Guinness Stout. This hip, laid-back eatery is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner from February through December. Call for winter hours.

We needed a quick and easy meal after our long drive from Cleveland. Tortugas' was just down the street from our cottage. We opted for burgers and fries. My mom has the Swiss Jerk Burger and I had a basic cheeseburger. The patty was large and cooked to perfection (medium). The fries were amazing. The salt and pepper they put on the fries is awesome. The tomato and lettuce on the burger was fresh and really topped it off. They didn't skimp on the cheese either. Our meal was pick-up.

We have been eating at Tortuga's for years. Love the Caribbean Jerk burger. We have always received stellar service when dining here.

After years of considering Tortuga's Lie a solid place to go for good food, we stopped this year and were quite disappointed. It was only 'okay'.
The service was okay. The food was okay. I'm not sure if it was just an off night, or what but w/ so many other choices, I don't think we'll go back.

We stopped for lunch after visiting Jockey's Ridge. We were tired, hot and hungry after being on the Dunes in the summer heat. The staff was great, got us seated after a short wait, brought drinks out fast and the food came out not too much longer afterwards. Our orders were perfect, the fish was fresh in our tacos, burritos and sandwich and my youngest, the chicken finger connoisseur, declared the chicken fingers one of her top favorites.

Stopped in last night for dinner. Steamed shrimp & veggies, fish tacos, salad of the day and the habenero chicken sandwich plus a geat selection of beers kept all of us happy. I can see a return trip this week for us. Love finding the places like this.

For several years Tortugas' has been a 'must stop' for our family. Everything I've ever had (most often the fish tacos, Teriyaki Burger and sushi) has always been great. I'd definitely recommend this place.

Rating: Great Pub Style, but soooooo much more 1/27/2013
Reviewer: MarylandMike

We have enjoyed Tortuga's for both lunch and dinner, in-season and off-season. Honestly, we have never been disappointed. The menu looks like pub food, but, do not be fooled. They put their Tortuga's twist on every dish. The place has style, good food and an off-beat ambiance. It is not a large place, so, if you are a large group, you might want to look elsewhere.

My mother loves this place. It is small and quaint, but very beachy. We ordered everything from salads to fish sandwiches and all agreed it was great. Great little place.

We were lucky last week to finally enjoy one of the best crab cake sandwiches served anywhere. Along with a Fat Tire it was a perfect lunch.

If you go no where else while visiting the Outer Banks, you absolutely must go to Tortuga's Lie and order either the Fish Tacos (tons of large chunks of mahi) or the Fish and Black Bean Burrito (stuffed with perfectly cooked tuna!). Seriously....go right now! Log off the computer and go! :-)

In summer, we usually stay in a house that's very close to Tortuga's. one member of our party goes there on a daily basis!! We all love it. Fabulous food (I am partial to the appetizers) and great atmosphere.

We have been coming here for 10 years and it is our family's favorite. I like it because you always get something you cannot get at home. Coco Loco chicken is my favorite and this year we were lucky enough to be there on the evening they had Chicken Tortilla soup - yum!

My kids have grown up with beach trips to Nags Head and the OBX. 30+ years now. Once I found Tortugas it became a priority to eat there every time we visited the beach on vacation. Now it is not just one of my required stops, but my 3 kids and their families have inherited their dads craving for the super food, friendly beach road atmosphere, homemade key lime pie and ice cold Coronas. Please stay the way you are. Every time I think of the Outer Banks I think of Tortuga,s and I smile. In case you didn't catch my message the food and memories are outstanding!

Great food, great beer, great hot sauce (pick up a bottle or two when you're there), and good service. It's no wonder there's usually a wait to get in.

Never dissapointed in the customer service, food and price. Small place with great atmosphere, very relaxed vibe. From burgers to pasta most everyone can find something on the menu to eat. Good portions and always piping hot. Even better that Tortugas' has gone all non-smoking, can taste the food even better now. They will continue to have my business! Big parties expect to be broken up not a very big place. Get there early as to avoid the long waits.

Fabulous burgers, crabcake sandwiches and probably the biggest crab legs around. We love Tortuga's! Wait staff is fun, great kidders, really interact with the customer. Prices are average, not to high in my book. Portions are big. Great selection of beers. Not real big inside, but definately worth the wait.

The grilled tuna wrap sandwich with an app. of chile chicken wings are the best. Stop here for your first OBX meal, then stop at Hotdogger's Surf n Cafe just north of the Wright Memorial Bridge for a great meal when leaving OBX. It's a hole-in-the-wall place just like Tortuga's

Visited yesterday (11/24) for lunch and decided to try a couple of appetizers from their menu. Their hummus is to die for, and the white pizza is outstanding. Hubby had to try their tuna sausage, which was declared "very interesting" and very good. Seems there weren't too many places open on the beach road on Monday afternoon, but have learned Tortuga's will remain open through the off-season this year. Good news!!
