How do you pronounce...

RE: How do you pronounce...

I'm surprised nobody has posted Chicamacomico yet. I've heard that one pronounced a whole bunch of different ways... Big grin

A friend of mine said CHICK-a-MOCK-a-ME-ko just to be annoying.

I enjoy saying CHICK-a-ma-COM-i-co as often as possible

There is a weekly (local) guest on 99.1 The Sound who clearly pronounces the "t" in Manteo when reporting. I never pronounced the t, but now I'm wondering what is actually correct? Maybe said guest will weigh in here...

RE: How do you pronounce...

Many years ago we were in Avon for the Christmas Week. My daughter's boyfriend was driving down from GSO to spend a few days with us. He called her about 11:00 at night and told her he was making good progress that he had just passed a turn-off sign for "WAN-CHESSIE." She died laughing. We all got a good laugh out of that one.

Renee, here's a story to go with that...At R.I Festival Park, they used to show a movie called "The Legend of Two Path", and in that movie, that's almost exactly how they pronouced Wanchese..."Wan Chess Ay". Things that make ya go hmmmmmmmmm Embaressed smiley

I still call Roanoke Island Festival Park "Ice Plant Island" as many of the locals do. I've also heard Hatteras pronounced "Hat-tress" as well down south.

Lots of VA towns have weird pronunciations. Near me is Fries (pronounced Freeze), there's Swoope up in Augusta County (pronounced Swope) and Staunton (pronounced Stanton), there's Buchanan (pronounced Buck-cannon)in Rockbridge Co. Hard to say how they all came about but you can almost always tell an outsider by the way they pronounce these places.

RE: How do you pronounce...

One more from Virginia, McGaheysville, pronounced Mah-GACK-ees-ville.

RE: How do you pronounce...
