|RE: Kelly's to close by end of November, become a Lidl|
We have an Aldi here in Davidson County, but I was completely unimpressed. Lousy selection, not that clean, a lot of foreign made off brands I've never heard of. Definitely a must-miss. If Lidl is like Aldi, I know I won't be shopping there!
I haven't tried any of them because I've been dieting but I've heard their foreign branded chocolate is far superior to what you can buy at other stores.
I have done a lot of shopping at Aldi and it's hit or miss. Like I said their produce, I don't bother with. It's always rotting, moldy or full of bugs, or even if it's in good shape when you buy it, within 48 hours of getting it home it's rotted. Their pre-packaged stuff like pico though is amazing.
Their cheese is really good but not much cheaper than Walmart or even Target. Their lunch meat is a LOT cheaper and my husband seems to like it.
I don't bother with their bread, it's always stale and crumbling when we get it.
However, their non-perishables, there are times I will go out of my way to get stuff there because it's simply better than what I can get at walmart. Their imitation girl scout cookies, oh man. SO good. For things like chips, snacks, bottled water, graham crackers, cereal, we've never had an issue, and often it's better than what we'd get at Walmart or Target. I want to say the only boxed item there we didn't love was the couscous. It was rather bland. But other pastas have been fine. Canned goods are always fine. It's actually my go-to for baking supplies around Christmas.
Haven't tried their toilet paper but their paper towels are stronger, last longer, and are way way cheaper than any other brand I've tried.
Similar experience, although we've had better luck with produce and bread at our local store. The Aldis seem to vary a bit, based on the location. Our local Aldi is in a decent neighborhood and the store seems to be kept very neat and clean. I've been to others where that was not so much the case. Not sure if it's the management or the shoppers, but they run a pretty lean operation where 3 people run the whole store.
It is a bit off putting at first, but after going a few times we've grown to appreciate the good deals and quick in and out, even if there is a line. Their cashiers are FAST. It's not for everything, but it's great for staples, and picking up some quick fixings for dinner.
PS- we like their girl scout knock off cookies better than the real ones.
