Staying in Colington Island the weekend of 7/23/17

Hello,
I am a long time lurker but have not participated as much as i should have.
My Brother, his family and I are staying on Colington Island this coming weekend for a long weekend 07/21-7/25.
We are using a friend of my Brother's house but i have never seen it and I have never been to/heard of Colington despite all these years I have been going down to Nags Head. (since '93)
What is Colington Island like to stay? Does it have its own grocery store, gas station, banking etc or is it more remote? ( am guessing that I will be going out to get groceries etc)
I know the Outer Banks area (Corolla, Duck, NagsHead, and Kitty Hawk ) pretty well and always drive out to my usual haunts to enjoy som R&R. I have not been down there in season however since the early 90s so I expect mucho traffic.
Is this Colington secluded oor is it easy to get in and out?
I also get the impression from some of the comments about Colington that it is a bit ritzy and it looks to just be homes off of the bay so no beach.
I am curious to know what to expect there in season.
Thanks for any comments.

It is KDH. I hate that drive. It isn't "ritzy!" Lmao. Lots of residential year round homes, no gas, some food in high season. Salt Box Cafe gets nice reviews. I used to get my seafood at Billy's in summertime. It is great if you have a boat or some water activities. Fishing, SUP, yak. Banana

Thanks for the information. I see on the map that it is way behind the Wright Bros Memorial on a single road. That sounds fun.
We don't have boat but the way my brother described the house he made it sound like it was "gated" or whatever.
I am just going down to get away from my job for a couple of days and will be bringing down my gear (computer, PS4 laptop) you know to "test" some software during the quiet evenings.
I am thinking that over there off of the sound will be less wind and more biting flies! I will also invest heavily in some deet.

Techinally it is "gated" but I usually wave & drive through. I have not noticed bugs being any worse there than other areas of the beach, except wooded areas. More of a standing water/still water issue. Dawn & dusk is the general time for that. Have fun! Don't work too hard. I think it is about 3 miles out. Not terrible unless your place is out past the speed humps. Watch for kids... Wink smiley

We've lived in Colington Harbour for 10 years. Not ritzy at all. You can get gas, some food, prepared food, beer and wine at TJ's. They are just outside the gated community. We also have Colington Pizza back here. There are no speed bumps. Some people (ritzy people I guess) like to talk badly about our community. Bottom line, it has been a great place to live. It's mostly year round residents. We have one of the best school districts in NC and we are surrounded by water. We are off the beaten path and it is very quiet back here. It is a 4 mile drive to the beach road. Enjoy your stay.

Oh good, no speed humps & gas! I forgot about the tackle shop too. There's a fire dept. also & my favorite pub for beer on the sound is Blue Crab Tavern. Colington Cafe is still open, right? They are an intimate setting with beer & wine, no mixed drinks, unless something changed there too? Martini Glass

Colington Cafe still open. Never been to Blue Crab but they do have their regulars. Owner (Argie) is very nice.

I think all your questions have pretty much been answered. Colington Harbor is 4 miles down Colington Road which is one way in & one way out. Like many roads here (one & one) don't be surprised to see sobriety check points. So have a DD when necessary.

The common area has a boat ramp, sound-side beach, pick-nick tables, and play ground equipment for the kids. There is a restroom building but I'm not sure if it has showers. There is also a pool if your brothers friend has a membership.

Colington is anything but ritzy. Haven't stayed there since 08, but I really enjoyed it.
