We are staying in a house near Jockey's Ridge,-South Ridge neighborhood. Is there a way to climb the dunes from that area, or will we need to drive to the park entrance and go in that way?

Yes, you can walk down Deering Street to Soundside road. Take a right and walk into Jockey's Ridge soundside entrance. You could also just drive and park there if you want to save your energy for the dunes. Beware though, they close the gate at sunset.

Thank you! Good to know about the gate being closed. I was thinking we could go up there for a sunset but maybe we should just drive to Kitty Hawk Kites and park for that.

It's just a gate for cars. You can walk around it with no problem. There are usually people watching sunset on the ridge, and the rangers wait until it's down before they lock up.

Thank you, I misunderstood.
