At a city council meeting Fridat night March 17, members of the Rehoboth Beach City Council voted to ban canopies from the city's beaches. Not just canopies but cooking devices and tents too.

Good. My in laws have a place in North Myrtle Beach. A few years ago a man had a heart attack on the beach and the first responders couldn't get through because of so many canopies. The man passed away. Needless to say, they are banned there as well but it takes an unfortunate situation to pass these laws.

So... a person can't have protection from the sun while on the beach? Glad I don't visit their beaches.

Plenty of prophylactic measures are readily available for sun exposure. As a malignant melanoma survivor of 25 years it has never been an issue for me.

What is a problem is those who choose to set up large camps that don't allow for emergency vehicles to pass. And don't even get me started on those who leave their camps out overnight, much less all week or longer.

That brings back quite the memory. Doc said to me "it came back a melanoma, and I said "was it malignant?" and he looked at me like I had 2 heads and said "it was a melanoma." He wasn't much for bedside manner, but he did save my life, and I guess educated me a bit, so who's complainin'…

A 2 sided coin for sure. I for one enjoy driving on the beach, putting up our canopies, lighting the grill and cooking, enjoying a full day at the beach with the protection of a sun shelter when needed and a good meal along with fishing, swimming, building sand castles with the kiddies etc. Makes for a great family day. We beach it all day at the beach when we go and having all that is nice. And when we leave you will have never known we were there. To each their own I guess.

There is no comparison to a crowded beach day in Rehoboth Beach, and a crowded beach day on OBX. Not saying I agree or disagree(stopped doing that on this board, haha), just stating that they are two different animals. What might need to be done at one might not need to be done at the other. For safety issues that is.

I would generally agree with you, but in this case it is a public safety issue. People claim their spot, put up the frame, and leave it there all week. Even if they don't come down to the beach, everyone else has to deal with this. Thumbs down

As with even the best things in life, too much of a good thing, or abuse of such things isn't good.

Canopies in and of themselves are not evil. Everyone has the right to criticize those that do stupid things like squat in front of the steps to the beach, set up and leave them up all week, set up immediately next to someone else.

But to cite one instance that may or may not have had anything at all to do with the placement of canopies as the ultimate evil of Canopies isn't fair.

The way the so-called Northern beaches (ie MD/DE/NJ/NY) are populated in the summer - blanket next to blanket - are symptomatic of the crowding in those areas. There aren't blessed with the configuration of the houses to beach area ratio that we enjoy in OBX.

Should Canopies be banned altogether? No. Should there be reasonable regulation of these self same Canopies? Absolutely.

Let the vilifications begin.

Canopy or umbrella, some relief from the sun on a scorching hot day is a good thing.

Canopies aren't the problem, the problem is too many people are trying to use too little beach. The canopy ban will do nothing but sell more umbrellas. This issue was driven by unhappy residents that are tired of dealing with the summer crowds. Rehoboth gets a lot of day trippers since it is the first beach town off of Route 1. Rehoboth will have to sell beach passes like NJ did to cut down on the crowds.
