RE: Bypassing the toll on 158. (And Wyatt update)

Okay Wyatt, cute,
got that. Why would anybody complain about that toll when they come here and spend $5 or 6 for an Ice Cream Cone. Spend thousands on a house rental and want to go around on a one lane road and 3 or 4 traffic lights????????? I've been told it's a protest or the "principle". Okay have it your way.

Pickle

If she wants to save a couple of bucks, who are you to judge? Like she said, it’s two more umbrella drinks. Why try to shame someone who just wants to save a couple of bucks? BTW - for all of you commenting on Wyatt’s baseball career .... I think that was Ginger’s boy. Wyatt was the swimmer extraordinaire, as I recall

It's a little more than principle. That toll was supposed to be taken off after the extension to the expressway was paid for. Most if not all of that expressway was paid for by the Feds to create a faster Hurricane evacuation route. Now they are just rap-ing folks for leaving Virginia and going to the OBX. Hopefully the Feds will catch up with them someday.

You shouldn't criticize a person for trying to save a few dollars in order to stay within their budget in order to visit the place they love. You should delete your reply.

A while back a lawyer in the Buffalo, NY area got the state to remove tolls on a particular section of the N.Y. Thruway. If it can be done in NY, then it likely can happen in VA. Get a couple of lawyers to dig into the funding documents and raise a ruckus.

RE: Bypassing the toll on 158. (And Wyatt update)

Everyone has an opinion about how to spend money. Good news is: our opinions don't need to make anyone else happy. mnhenderson, I hope you have a great vacation and keep on posting pics of that darling grandbaby....what eyes!

But just as an FYI about the Expressway: It was built with a combination of local, state and federal funds and the loans are to be paid back entirely by toll proceeds. The last of the loans need to be paid off by 2032, according to the revenue study done in 2010. I don't know if the debt has been restructured since then, so at a minimum, we can all look forward to either paying tolls or using the shortcut until then.

If a toll makes it more convenient for me to get down to the beach, I am happy to have the choice to pay it. I remember many hours of standstill traffic in Chesapeake and Currituck before the roads were improved. It must have been hard on those folks in Chesapeake to deal with all of that vacation traffic every week. And it is true that it is a much safer and quick way for people to get back home in an evacuation.

RE: Bypassing the toll on 158. (And Wyatt update)

mnhenderson asked a very simple question. What are the directions to bypass the toll. She didn't ask for your opinion on whether she should take the toll or not. You think taking the toll is a better option, great, you do that.

I'll never understand why some people try to belittle someone else because of their decision. I guess it makes them feel like they are better than someone else, but the reality is that it just makes them look petty and sad. I'm especially disappointed by the LOCALS post. Marylander, yeah I expected that. pickles? Didn't expect that.

Wyatt is a cutie! Hopefully you can ignore the negative posts and continue to post here. Would love to see a trip report!

John

Good Gawd! Let it go. It’s no one’s business but mn’s and her familiy’s how they choose to spend THEIR money.

Are we all snowflakes here? Can't handle a comment without taking offense and just handling it like an adult conversation? People I hang around with are far more mature and able to laugh at themselves when someone points out something like that. Geez people. Toughen up a little.

marylander

Ah, there it is, the tough guy snowflake comment coming from an anonymous internet user. Wow, very tough. I'm sure you do talk to people you know and rib them (as do I), but I'm also positive you wouldn't do that in person to someone you didn't know. It has nothing to do with trying to be a tough guy. What happened to polite, kind, caring conversations? Why is that a bad thing?

Hiding behind an anonymous user name on an internet forum. Yup, that's the real makings of a tough guy. Laughing smiley I'll be sure to point you out as a snowflake when you post about beach nourishment. Just toughen up and enjoy your vacation...

John

Precious baby!!!!! Congratulations!!!!!

RE: Bypassing the toll on 158. (And Wyatt update)

I don't do the bypass to save a couple of dollars. The ride is 670 miles form MA and I've already paid enough in tolls, gas, and vehicle wear-and-tear, that a couple of dollars is inconsequential.

Looking forward to the mid-Currituck bridge toll discussion, if it ever gets built. Banana

I will gladly pay the mid-Currituck bridge toll since it will place me very close to our house. Thumbs up

RE: Bypassing the toll on 158. (And Wyatt update)

I'm happy that Marylander and Pickle religiously take the expressway the whole way, as it's that much less traffic on Battlefield Blvd for me. For me, the Wawa is a perfect halfway point gas food and pee stop that's open during the weird hours that drive when I opt not to fly down. Also, when I drive I usually have my trailer so it's $9 on the weekends. During non-peak times I don't have a particular adversion to the tolls, but it's easier to exit onto Battlefield than try to get back on the highway.

And I've measured it, it consistently takes me about 3 minutes longer than staying on the expressway.

Once again. Thank you everyone that has had kind words about our little Caspian.(grandbaby). I'm not a snowflake or thin skinned. I'm just a fan of kindness. (as opposed to snarky, judgemental people.) I used to be here all the time, then it just seemed like no one could ask a question without some rude comment. I am enjoying seeing some old friends post here and learning a few new names of good folks. I'll try to post a trip report for you. For now, here's a picture of my favorite place to see the sunsets in Corolla. Happy vacationing. smiley

RE: Bypassing the toll on 158. (And Wyatt update)

I've been bypassing the toll ever since I was diagnosed with stick-it-to-the-man-itis. I do it for no other reason than it brings me joy. Theeth smiley

What a cutie! Good to have you here again. I don't post often for the same reasons.

RE: Bypassing the toll on 158. (And Wyatt update)

Welcome back! We take that route to avoid the toll all the time. I'm not sure why anyone would object to the idea. It's only a few minutes longer and many people go that way. Have a great trip and don't be a stranger.

Cheers,
Will

Adorable grandbaby!
We have an EZ pass, and sometimes take the Chesapeake Expressway. and sometimes bypass the toll road. In summer on a Saturday when traffic is heavy, there have been times we saved time by bypassing the crowded toll road. the Wawa is a great stop for a bathroom break for the dog and the people, and if we need gas.

RE: Bypassing the toll on 158. (And Wyatt update)

Have never tried it - but definitely will this year

RE: Bypassing the toll on 158. (And Wyatt update)

I for one am thankful for this post. I’ll gladly trade 10 minutes for $8! Marylander why don’t you just go sit in traffic and go to Ocean City, they seem more your type of crowd.

RE: Bypassing the toll on 158. (And Wyatt update)

It’s been ages since I’ve driven that stretch, like maybe 12+ years. Are you all not doing Centerville Turnpike at Six Flags Over Jesus? 64 to Indian River Rd?
