Anybody have any updates of how it's going in Corolla? Are they getting hit hard?

RE: Corolla

I just walked you the beach. Morris Drive access
Only a little rain earlier. Just windy. Not bad either. Windsurfer off the beach access just north of Corolla Light.

RE: Corolla

Anyone know if we can get across the bridge? I was hoping to come tomorrow evening.

Weather forecast specifically for address of my house in Corolla says max winds of 30 miles per hour. The nor 'easters the beginning of this year were worse.

Per the Dare NC alerts I'm getting:

"As of 8:30 a.m. this [Thursday] morning access to Dare County is restricted to only those with a Priority One Critical Personnel Pass issued by Dare County Emergency Management or a Critical Needs Pass issued by Currituck County Emergency Management."

Latest > Dare County Bulletin #6"

"With the changing forecast, tropical storm force winds are now expected Thursday morning. As a result, there will be no restrictions on access into Dare County until 8:30 a.m. on Thursday September 13. There are no planned bridge closures, but access into the county will be restricted to those with a Priority One Critical Personnel Pass issued by Dare County Emergency Management or a Critical Needs Pass issued by Currituck County Emergency Management after 8:30 a.m. Thursday."

Keep posted about reentry here:

RE: Corolla

I would be really surprised if the restrictions weren't relaxed by tomorrow night and you can get on with the Currituck post-storm hangtag they mailed us.

RE: Corolla

Thanks Paul - that’s what I’m thinking too. As long as rain doesn’t flood Duck.

RE: Corolla

This storm and the coverage is confusing me. I realize Corolla is at the extreme northern edge, but the report I just watched on CNN said that this is just getting started...???...am I missing something, or is it really a non-event?

RE: Corolla

All depends on how far from the center. Corolla is well over 100 miles from the center. That is what the journalists can't distinguish. WeatherNation has been calling NC12 'US12' all day.

- Like an average nor'easter up north so far. A day or so of winds.
- A moderate nor'easter down at the tri-villages. Typical overwash on NC 12.... so far.
- Gets worse as you get down to between Buxton and Hatteras and on to Ocracoke. NC 12 seeing a lot of voerwash between Frisco and Hatteras village.
- Full bore hurricane approaching Morehead CIty to Wilmington, Topsail Beach, etc. It's gonna be a big event there, like Irene or worse on the OBX. It is indeed just getting started there.

RE: Corolla

Check the web cams here for the conditions on the northern areas. Not too serious at this time and the winds not forecasted to change much.

RE: Corolla

Corolla is 190 miles from Wilmington according to an "as the crow flies" web site. Needs to be a storm 400 miles wide for us to be in the outer bands.

RE: Corolla

Corolla might not get hit too hard, but a lot of the employees for the rental companies, stores, etc., have evacuated, so you might not be able to get into your rental.

Also, there is still a chance that the storm could wrap around and hit OBX from the west. So, it might be days before we really know what the end result will be.

RE: Corolla

I do know that my laptop power cord that Nan sent to me early Monday by 2-day UPS delivery is still in Raleigh. Grrr ...

It was in Raleigh at 9 PM Tuesday. No problem for Wednesday delivery with the storm still south of Bermuda, right? Nope! Grrr ...

RE: Corolla

If we come down we can bring you a cord.

RE: Corolla

Thanks. I am leaving Sunday, though. I ordered one to be delivered at home.

Nan sent it to Brindley, so I will pick it up in a few weeks. You down the week before Columbus Day? We are probably doing another breakfast since folks really seemed to like the breakfast get-together.

Florence is 400 miles wide!
from phys.org
"At 8 a.m. EDT on Wednesday, Sept. 12, NOAA's National Hurricane Center (NHC) warned "Dangerous Florence heading toward the U.S. southeast coast and is expected to bring life-threatening storm surge and rainfall to portions of the Carolinas and Mid-Atlantic States."
Putting the Size and Surge of the Storm in Perspective
Florence is about 400 miles in diameter. For an understanding of how large the system is 400 miles is the distance from Baltimore, Maryland to Boston, Massachusetts."

RE: Corolla

For perspective..... Current sustained winds around the eye are 100 mph. Winds at Corolla right now are 31 mph. A bit over 100 miles away.

RE: Corolla

Well, regardless of the official size, from my limited vantage point here in KDH this has been a non event for island points north of Bonner. As others have said, a few rain bands and some very modest wind. Barely a foot and half below normal in the canals.

On the Other hand the Cape Lookout wind meter looks a bit lively

RE: Corolla

Been up since 4 AM. Thought I'd post in case folks are concerned about their homes. Everything was fine overnight where I am. Little rain.

High tide is around noon. Will see if that does anything.

I will check on homes for people again like after Matthew 2016. Message me, if you want your home checked. This was nothing like Matthew.

Going back to bed.

RE: Corolla

Thanks Paul, get some rest.

RE: Corolla

See if you can watch WAVY News 10 at wavy.com, if you want northern OBX information. Reporter on OBX just said he has been out since 2 AM and hasn't seen a drop of rain.

RE: Corolla

People seem to forgot that we have been closed down for days. No food delivery for grocery stores and restaurants. Rental houses have pool and deck furniture stored inside and anywhere there was room. Tourists are going to show up expecting everything will be normal. Beds will not be made if there are even linens available. There will be leaves and sand in pools.
They will complain and it will not be nice.

RE: Corolla

Steve ... just saw Currituck county access allowed starting 7 AM, Saturday with the county re-entry pass or tax bill, etc
