We Might Lose 2 in Rodanthe

Hurricane Chris might take the first 2 houses on the south side of the pier. Number 2 is the house with the cam on it.

Looking from the North.

RE: We Might Lose 2 in Rodanthe

We were there last week, about 3/4 mile north of the pier. I walked down to see how bad it was and to see a house that we almost rented. It was the one just to the south of the house in your picture. So glad that we didn't rent it even though it is okay for now, but the beach was so narrow. Last year the beach was wide there. My sister rented a house the week before us in the same area we stayed, and the owner of her house said that the cove that formed just south of the pier has always been around to some extent, and that it migrates up and down the beach throughout the year(s).

RE: We Might Lose 2 in Rodanthe

Not surprised.
The county should of never let them build north of Sea Oats Dr when they started asking in the early 80's but the money talked.

RE: We Might Lose 2 in Rodanthe

Believe I received an alert about this earlier this morning from OBX Beach Conditions, warning about decking falling into the ocean...debris with nails, etc., and asking people to pile up debris nails down...and saying Chicamacomico Banks Fire & Water Rescue will do their best to remove it appropriately.

Definitely do not want to step on any of that or get hit by it.

RE: We Might Lose 2 in Rodanthe

We stayed north of the pier a few years ago one house back and the ocean was under those houses .

RE: We Might Lose 2 in Rodanthe

Yes, that "hole" wanders up and down the beach on both the north and south side of the pier. It's been stuck right there for a few months now.

North of Sea Oats is the Mirlo/S Turns area. This is almost 2 miles south from there.

These 2

built in 1970 and 1989

The 1970 is 48 years old so FEMA will depreciate the value by 48 years if the water takes it out. That is how FEMA flood insurance works. The building is tax valued at $110k so the owner might get $40-50k for a total loss. Sad smiley

FEMA depreciates at the rate of 1% to 2% per year base on the age of house, and the owner gets the privilege to pay for any demolition charges
been there done that

RE: We Might Lose 2 in Rodanthe

The northern house of these two was just listed for sale for $388k a week or two ago. The owner paid to have the house moved back on the lot about 15 years ago. I guess he can move it back no further on that lot.

In Kitty Hawk you have the option to tear it down yourself and keep the nearly worthless lot or let the town demo it and they take the lot title. That would save maybe $25/year in taxes. The only value left in the lot would be to a neighbor to use it as a septic field or to build a gazebo on.

The next couple of houses have also been listed recently for $400k plus. Good luck with that.

There are quite a few homes showing on Zillow for sale in Rodanthe on the beach with no dune line. One going to $895k. The pictures are beautiful and show the back porch with the surf line about 100' away.

Rodanthe oceanfront is a great place to rent, but crazy place to buy. Those houses going for around $400k can generate close to $70k/year in rentals.

RE: We Might Lose 2 in Rodanthe

Wow. We stayed in the house 2 houses down (4th house) back in 2013. Plenty of beach back then, but I believe they had just done some BN a year or two before.

John

This is the second house in the first picture.

RE: We Might Lose 2 in Rodanthe

I think we stayed in the house to the south quite a few years ago. It was called Mermaids Tears at that time and was a huge bargain the only year it rented through Midgett. I don't remember there being a lot of beach in front of it even then. A great house if this is the right one and very sad to see what is happening to it.

Hurricane Chris

Hurricane? Wait, what did I miss? Its been a bit sloppily pleasant, but hurricane? and what happened to A&B storms?

I have to stay In more to keep up. Big grin

RE: We Might Lose 2 in Rodanthe

The one closest to the ocean with the porches falling into it had a sign on the house with a VRBO number on it in one of the pictures I saw on FaceBook. It's available next week for about $5,700.

Here is the almost exact same shot taken on 6/11/18. I know the right hand house well as I have stayed there before. It is called Winterobe.

What a difference 30 days has made. The dune moved back quite a bit.

RE: We Might Lose 2 in Rodanthe

Just saw a video on Weathernation that said they were going to move those houses tomorrow.....approximately 60 back from their current position

You haven't been watching Jeremy on channel 10! "A" was used in May. Berle is now down in the Bahamas area threatening to reform.

Can you post a link to that? I would think once they wait so long that a house is in the surf and things start to collapse it's a goner. Saving the one further back makes sense.

The BN done at S Turns had no real effect down here. Some say it was detrimental and caused a section of the pier to fail.

That dune and the road behind it is gone. They put barricades up 2 weeks ago. The yello Pier House cottage is now Ofront.
