RE: "OBX Getting Swallowed Up" according to NG

Sorry, I'm not convinced about sea levels rising, just the amount of bs behind it. Plenty of studies out there about it, if you care to look. If not, delete this post too.

Pretty hard to tell the people on Tangier Island that water level isn't rising.

RE: "OBX Getting Swallowed Up" according to NG

Get a more complete view of things by reading up on 'subsidence' of land which is part of the issue in the central eastern US coast. And, anyone who thinks that the measurement accuracy of ANY current instrumentation is spot-on is quite foolish. There are corrections being made constantly to the gathered data. I'd seriously suggest some in-depth reading on that topic.

Science makes LOTS of mistakes: The lead medical institutes in France wanted to imprison Louis Pasteur as his work was coming to fruition. And look at the social engineering based on phrenology in the last century, as well as the dinosaur theories. Climate science theories are undergoing constant revision too, so stay tuned. And the very well documented incidents of 'politicization' of climate science is a reality that is resulting in a different form of denial, and evoking the sad response of attacking people rather than examining things objectively.

CoolBreezeKDH makes the real point... what is the policy response going to be? What kinda gets me is that:
- the policy response so far is many times faster than the sea level change effects
- 'the big one', i.e., a category 4 or 5 hurricane is going to do tons more damage and destruction that we can't do anything to head off

RE: "OBX Getting Swallowed Up" according to NG

Well, that's not entirely accurate. Sea levels are still very difficult to get clean data. Bottom line is that sea levels have been rising, but not at an accelerated rate as predicted by climate science. Instead it rises at a constant rate seemingly unaffected by temperature or co2. And levels will continue to rise until the next ice age or mini ice age.

marylander

You linked to an opinion piece by a climate change denier. He also doesn't believe second hand smoke is bad. If you don't mind, I'm going to go with the science community on this one...

At least we're starting to make some process here and no longer denying that sea levels are rising. Science will continue on and will correct itself if needed.

Yes, indeed I did. And he's one of many of the world's top climate experts who disagree with the so-called consensus. Names like Singer, Curry and Lindzen and Spencer are voices with huge credibility in the field and are naively dismissed by far lesser voices.

Climate change happens. It always has and always will. Humans have a minor role in it, that much is certain. Cycles and systems much bigger than us are the main drivers.

We're wasting away trillions in researching and combatting the wrong enemy. How much could we have accomplished with that money if we focused on solving fresh water crises, ocean fisheries management, next gen energy sources, etc. CO2 isn't the enemy. Its helping the world to produce record levels of crops much needed to feed growing populations. The science world has chased a red herring and many know it.

RE: "OBX Getting Swallowed Up" according to NG

Every major government, our own military and ALL of it's resources (the largest by far in the world), every major scientific group..... essentially everyone with any reasonable information agrees that climate change is real and humans are contributing to it in a major way. Do you know who Jim Bridenstine is? He is the current head of NASA who was also a long time denier. Go check his very recent story out. Ocean levels are rising. Fact. The rate of rise has been increasing in the last several decades. Fact. It is expected that it will continue to rise at rates even higher than now. NOT FACT, but educated opinion, I'll go with NOAA on this one.

Every major country, every major military, every major corporation with skin in the game are planning for increased sea level rise. It seems to me to be reasonable for the OBX to do the same. I'm sure they already are.....

RE: "OBX Getting Swallowed Up" according to NG

the funny thing about science is that it matters not one iota what you want to 'believe' about it. It simply is what it is - and the seas are rising. Its happening even if you some dont want to admit it.

Yes, barrier islands move and shift. Its a perfectly natural, expected phenomenon, just as the islands of the Chesapeake bay are slowly sinking due to the geological makeup of the region (an ice sheet to the north during the last ice age caused the land in the bay to create a 'bulge' or sorts. with that ice sheet gone, it is slowly receding down). Both of these would continue to occur with or without sea level rise. Both of these can and will cause issues when we as humans choose to build on this type of unstable land - folks have known this for centuries and made accommodations. Structures in the islands of the bay were often temporary or easily transportable, easily deconstructed and loaded onto small boats when the time came to move on.

However, the real problem is the combination - when you combine the natural shifts of barrier islands, or the natural sinking of land in the bay with the rapidly increasing sea level rise, you have a phenomenon that is eating up land in a manner much faster and more volatile than anyone had been prepared for. Saying 'well its just what barrier islands do' is dismissing half the issue.

Don't be angry with the deniers who have resisted. Be angry with those who have mislead you. I am ready to break out the tar and feathers. They have a monetary interest and they know how to play the game. They have been caught 'averaging' the data to suit their agenda. Notice they had to drop the Global Warming game because that scam fell through with millions of weather stations worldwide saying otherwise. Much, much harder to debunk the sea level change game because the public doesn't have their own raw satellite data, so it's a perfect and irrefutable scam. So that leads into my final point - a millimeter is .0394 inches and the ocean is 140,000,000 square miles (give or take, it's an estimated number too). To claim there is that kind of accuracy from their instrumentation in orbit thousands of miles up, through a wavy atmospheric envelope, then down to a wavy surface, back up through the atmosphere again is, well, you get my point. Or you don't. Or won't because maybe there's a financial reason not to. Good day and Happy 4th.

RE: "OBX Getting Swallowed Up" according to NG

Since virtually all global warming models have failed to hold up to scrutiny over time I think the time for debate is over. There is no such thing as man made global warming. The world warms, the world cools and the wheels on the bus go round and round.

RE: "OBX Getting Swallowed Up" according to NG

The answer is easy in theory - harder to implement.

What we need is to invent a car motor that does not pollute and runs on sea water. Problem solved - we can just burn up the excess sea water in our cars!

Thumbs up

Wow, so much hyperbole, so little fact.

Hyperbole? I don't see that in Tortuga John's post.

Actually, all of it is gross exaggeration.

RE: "OBX Getting Swallowed Up" according to NG

We'll have to agree to disagree on that.

RE: "OBX Getting Swallowed Up" according to NG

We'll have to agree to disagree on that.

obxmini

Okay, what exactly does it mean for a nation to agree that man is causing global warming? Every pole of citizens in most every major nation is pretty evenly split. Half think man causes it and it will be or is a problem; the other half disagree. In the US, only 41% think it's real and is harming anyone now. He claims all major nations and governments agree, yet our current admin does not agree. So clearly not every major nation believes. There's exaggeration number 1. Shall I continue?

RE: "OBX Getting Swallowed Up" according to NG

marylander, you can write whatever words you want, but it doesn't make them true. It is universally accepted that climate change is real and man is accelerating it. Tortuga John is not wrong here. You can choose to ignore it, but that won't make it go away. You can continue to read the the denier words, but it's funny how those keep changing to keep up with actual science. No worries, science will continue.

miinx said it best. Science doesn't care what you think. It's only cares about what actually is. If something comes along that gives more information and changes something, science will accept it. It's actually a great model to follow.

My opinion is that the data is manufactured to support the scheme. Send in your own money out of your own pocket, not anybody else's by way of taxes just because you believe it. Stop forcing your opinion on the rest of us and deleting our posts just because you don't agree.

RE: "OBX Getting Swallowed Up" according to NG

Taxes and how that money is spent is a whole 'nother discussion that I'm sure would quickly get off topic. I'm going to bow out of this thread now. The data and research is there. You can choose to ignore it, believe it's made up, whatever.

Have a great day.

Well no, I confess I didn't, until you brought my attention to it. He's a politician so he's trustworthy, right? It took me all of 2 minutes to look up his largest contributors, one of which is Northrup Grumman. Well guess what Northrup Grumman is into nowadays? Renewable energy, lol. No bias there, nope, nuttin at all. I wonder if he knows Al? Big grin

Oh and BTW peeps (you know who you are), Mr Bridenstine is a republican so you can calm down about flagging this post too.

One last thing Tortuga John, are you related to J4YDubs? Nahhhhh, couldn't be, it's just a coincidence you are both named John. Just curious why you logged in to make this one post and then poof, you're gone.

I'm not sure if there's any relation since I don't know Tortuga John, but if you're implying that it's me I can assure you that I wouldn't have used John in the name. Laughing smiley That tin foil hat must get hot.

They did! I read about it almost 35 years ago in a Mechanics Illustrated magazine while waiting to get my hair cut at a barbershop. A guy had invented a method of fission and was running his car on seawater. A couple of gallons would outlast the tires as I recall. It was hailed as the future of travel. It was so fascinating I've never forgotten. Nor have I ever heard it mentioned again until I just read your post.

I knew it, just a coincidence. Big grin
