vacationing in early september and as usual am planning on doing alot of fishing. i have my surf rods covered but would like to try throwing some lures this year for a change. first off is it even worth it to throw lures in the ocean while surf fishing and if it is what kind of setup should i go with. i have striper setups that i use in freshwater lakes in pa but i use casting reels and i don't know how they would hold up in the sand. also i would rather have a setup to use just for saltwater. i am looking to buy a quality setup than will last for a couple years of 2-3 weeks a year fishing if taken care of properly. i don't need the highest dollar gear but i want to purchase something that will last. also a few lures to pick up would help. thanks for the help

Okay without knowing where you are stayng or wish to fish, I'll give you a general answer for your time frame (Early September) from Corolla to Oregon Inlet, my territory. First off there is nothing "Big" in early September, Secondly in most locations the fish will be fairly close to the beach. That said you will find small Blues up to 2 or 3 lbs (that's big) that will take shiny metal lures that are not real big (1/2 to 1 oz.). There may be some Flounder that will take a metal lure same as the Blues or a Grub Tail or Bucktail no more than an oz. Trout will take the Grub Tails and Bucktails along with bigger Mirror Lures (mostly late Spring). There may be some Spanish Mackerel or False Albacore but they move so fast and generally are outside the bar that even having longer rods you can't keep up with them. So what do you need, a 6 1/2 to 7 foot medium action spinning outfit with 8 to 10 lb test line. It has to be capable of cast lures as small as 1/2 oz up to maybe 2 oz under extreme conditions. I don't get involved in technology, I have been using a Penn 4500SS or 5500SS on a 7 foot Ugly Stick, works just fine during the summer. Have fun.

ok thanks for the help. i am also going to spend try fishing that bridge going south towards rodanthe(oregon inlet bridge maybe). a guy i work with says he has way better luck fishing there than he has ever had in the surf. another quick question how is the fishing/weather in late oct or early nov? i have another week of vacation to burn after the sept trip and was thinking about going back and triing my luck then.

oh and my buddy told me he using bomber lures that we would use for stripers and he had luck using those. had something break 30lb spiderwire fishing off the rocks down by that bride using a bomber but figures it was a stingray or something. that is where i want to concentrate on throwing lures/plugs. not so much in the surf as that is where i would rather just sit and use bloodworms and drink a few after supper and watch the waves. i really want to spend my mornings on the rocks at that bridge this year. thanks again

A nice light weight graphite rod is what you want 9 to 11 ft, Light weight is good if you plan on using most of the day. A Hopkins or sting silver are what is used most of the time, sting silver comes in many colors but I find the green or bubbly gum work for me. check the local tackle shop to see what is working. Always worth it watch for fish jumping early or late in the day. In the fall you might also find trout too us a red lead head with green Mr wiggly should work for them A fast retrieval reel is what you want the faster you retrieve it the better for spanish and blue fish:fish:
